Newbie in sacramento

Postby mariannf » Sun Nov 08, 2015 10:48 pm

hi all,
I have read many of the past threads and there is a lot of great and inspiring info here from some very generous people.
I am planning for either a 5x9 or 5x10 on an hf 4x8 super duty, no galley. I just want something cozy for me and my family and want to keep it simple since this is my first build.
My first consideration is whether to go above the fenders or to go flush with the trailer frame and have wheel wells. Is there any reason to do one way rather than the other?
I'll post this Q somewhere else on the site as well since I don't yet know where folks might be looking and see it.
Any and all advice appreciated.

Welcome Marianne,

Lot's of good information on this forum. I spent a lot of time reading build journals.

I would think having your floor on the trailer frame would make it stronger, lower the center of gravity and make the trailer not as tall.

I am in Sacramento and am currently restoring an old teardrop. If I can be of any help let me know.

Hi Mariann ... welcome to the group and Kudo's to you for taking on the challenge of a build ...

I agree with SC Campbell ... locating the floor low on the frame and reading and asking questions ...
:applause:

If I can be so bold to suggest to make a list of wants and needs; not just what you think you want/need, but what-if's as well ... for example, you say you are going to forego the galley ... many TD and small Trailer owners do not use their galley ... however, there are many that do. Are you going to carry all your galley needs in the TV (This works also). I am just trying to give you things to think about ... If you haven't yet, try hooking up with a TD group in your area and spend a trip camping with them ... most groups welcome anyone that likes to camp and are glad to show you their rig and explain the how's, and why's of the build; the TearJerkers, at least here in Minnesota/Wisconsin, do. The last trip we made had TD's, a small stand-up trailer, tiny Scamp Stand-up trailers, and even a couple that camped in a tent while making plans for their trailer.
Happy Camping & Building,
John (JC)

Welcome!
Yes you should either camp with or drop in on a group of Teardrop Campers.
They are a friendly bunch. ;)
I think after seeing how Teardrop Camping works, you will re consider your "Galley " thoughts.
The Galley in a teardrop is the focal point!
Good Luck with your research.

I'll vote for the whole cabin area to be built above the fenders and allow for storage underneath.

Take a look at Lucy25's build video:

No galley?

Thanks very much for the welcome and wise words! I hadn't seen these posts before now. I am still thinking of going above the wheels. It does sound like a great idea to go to a TD camp event. Any suggestions for northern Ca?

If you don't get at your project over the winter, you can attend the Shasta Lake Gathering Apr. 28 to May 1 at Antlers RV Campground.
It is the Largest Gathering of the year on the Western USA.
You will see every version of Teardrop or Tinny Trailer at this event!

Thanks Brian and Sandi! I will start in before then. That might be a goal date to finish and attend. I'll post updates on progress. I just finished assembling the HF trailer. Next is the substrate.

Tony I did watch Lucy's video that was a good reference. Do you know the best method for attaching the on end 2x4s to the trailer frame?

Great News!
We look forward to meeting you.
There is just so much build information here on the Forum.
It is just a matter of finding it and reading it. The real trick is to ask questions!
There is a great electrical section.
Sorry, I am not much help, as I build "Non Traditional" Teardrops.
You should start A build Journal here though......it will help to keep you inspired and get you a lot of help.
