Door curtains inside?

Postby noseoil » Tue Nov 17, 2015 9:38 pm

I'm looking for ideas on installing curtains in the tear. I've figured out how I'll do the round port holes on the inside, but the door curtains are what I'm interested in now. I have factory made doors, so I'm thinking a simple curtain rod along the top and some fabric is the way to go. We were OK this weekend without any, but it's sort of like being in a fish bowl without something, plus the windows can get cold when the temperatures drop. They need to be simple, good as insulation & keep things dark for sleeping.

Image

Would anyone care to post pictures of their designs for me to look at? Wondering about a double-thick or lined cloth, with darkness & some insulation value being in the mix somehow. Could be a rod, elastic or rope to hold the top edge... Thanks, tim

Tim:

I don't have a good photo of ours. I used Kayakdlk's idea of using marine curtain hardware. It works great.

viewtopic.php?f=50&t=57065&start=60 But in our 'drop, the curtain nests in the front when not in use.

Here's a really bad panoramic photo. The photo warps the straight lines, but you get the idea.

Image

I bought the aluminum curtain track ––and hardware–– from Sailrite. http://www.sailrite.com/Curtain-Track-H ... luminum-48 The 4' foot piece works for two of the factory doors. Keep in mind, the entire door doesn't need to be covered, just the glass.

I put a piece of nylon webbing with a snap attached to the wall to gather the curtain and hold it forward when not in use. I'm pleased with the curtains and I think the wife really likes 'em.

Pictures of my window curtains but I think both would work well for windows or a door

For daytime my curtains are a thin gauze weight cotton sheer that allows lots of light to come through but people can't see through. They hang over simple wooden dowels.

Image

At night I part the sheers and velcro (with four tabs) black fleece curtains straight over the same rod the sheers hang from. They block out almost all of the light so even when the lights are on inside of the trailer you can't or can barely tell from outside. One of the nice things about fleece is you don't have to sew/finish the edges. Very similar to felt in that the raw edges won't fray. If you're curious to see how the velcro attaches let me know and I can take additional pictures. I just fold them away during the daytime.

Image

I also made an additional curtain out of mosquito net to cover my door when I want the ventilation but not the bugs that come with it.

Not a great picture but an idea of how the mosquito net curtain worked inside the door with my pup sleeping outside. I attached it with a long strip of grey, industrial strength velcro along the top (hooks on the trailer, loops on the curtain to prevent snagging), two short strips at the mid-point on each side, and tucked the bottom under the mattress.

I have seen a person use a low cost roll up window shade and replace the shade part with fabric. Rolls right up out of the way.

This is what I do.

I used upholstery fabric. It is heavier then normal curtain fabric. There are 2 pieces of fabric back to back sewed together. Then sew a piece of Velcro to the back side of the flap up top. Roll the curtain up and mark the place where the roll comes in contact with the velcro on the flap. Sew the other piece of Velcro there. You can also sew another piece of velro on the back of the curtain at the bottom. Then the curtain can be used half way open. Makes it nice to cover part of the window but still let air in.

Miss Piggy's curtains are double sided with tiny earth magnets sewn in around the edges.
Easy up ...Easy down! But MP is made of steel so magnetic curtains were an easy decision !

PS
Kermit may have the same magnetic curtains.

I chose a double duty method on my tear, my backing plates for the roof rack are mounting plates for a grab bar, which the wife made curtains like a shower with rings to slide on the grab bar. No pic's after the curtain's were hung.

Image

This is how I mounted my roof rack, the bracket also serves as a backing plate for my grab bar/curtain rod

Image

Here's the inside front of the grab bar/curtain rod which also serves as a backing plate for the roof rack bracket, the serve each other so to speak.

Image

And the rear. I use the grab bar to swing my feet out and pull myself right out the door, plenty stout......works wonderful :D

Whatever method you use, be sure to at least double your fabric. Test, at night, by turning a light on inside and looking in from outside.

I found some black out curtains in a color I liked at the dollar store
Took them to my dry cleaned and the cut and trimmed them to size for 5 bucks
They block out all light.

Mine were simple and fairly inexpensive. Used a cloth shower curtain. One curtain will cover two doors. Cut to fit door and use a cup hook in each corner at the top to hold in place. Simply pull them off the cup hook on one end and let them hang on the other end when getting in or out.

Not the best picture but you get the idea.

We rely on our side tents for window privacy. For light control we take our micro fiber towels and hang them on the inside bar of my Wiley windows.
For sleeping in the cold we tuck the towel over the top of the Wiley window glass so it hangs inside. They keep us warm and act like black out curtains.
