What's the smallest and/or most affordable trailer you'd dare use to build a small standy?

When I built my 12' long, 83"wide Standie I looked for a trailer that might work. I eventually decided to weld up my own since there were no really good options out there. I first ordered a Dexter Torflex axle that would meet my needs and than welded up the frame using 2" square tubing to fit the axle. It all worked out well and pulls beautifully. Since most Standies are heavier than small teardrops, I have a 3500 lb axle under it. The campers final weight which includes air conditioner and propane tank came in at 2620 lb's. Some of the weight was from the frame which was over built. But, it gives me piece of mind going down the road.

Some people use an old tent trailer chassis, like Apache or one of those. Some of those types have a lowered area where you step in. Some people buy them, strip them, and sell them as flat bed trailers. Just keep your eyes open to Craigslist, Ebay, and the newspapers and maybe you'll find one that will work for you, ready to be stripped down or already stripped and ready to build on.

Any used or new trailer out there should work, keeping the weight down on a taller trailer will be a bit more of a challenge.

It kind of depends on your trailer design. By putting the bed and storage up front I was able to use a standard 5'x8' trailer and build a dropped floor on the rear.

I used pop up tent camper frames on most of my builds. They usually have 2000 lb axles, and if the hubs are 5 lugs, and you are uncomfortable with the 12-13" tires most come with, you can upgrade to 14-15" pretty easily. The frames are channel steel, and usually support a standie without issue. Here is a few examples...

Yes...all on pop up frames! In Indiana anyway the BMV did not care that the camper was no longer a pop up, only that the VIN on the title matches the frame plate.

I understand your thoughts about "a courtesy thing" but it comes off as most un-polite.

While it is certainly okay to voice your opinion, especially since this is a somewhat self regulated board, care should be taken not to speak for the majority if you have not been asked to be a moderator.

Brian, being from another country, you may not know that OK stands for Oklahoma, just as CA stands for California. It's a US 'thang' that has to do with our mail service. If you want specific information from someone, especially a woman, you would probably do best to PM that person. Many of us worry that our emails and phone numbers might end up in the wrong hands. Canada is still a lot safer than the USA; so, you probably aren't familiar with this.

How can you help people that post once and obviously don't really want help, judging by the effort (being personal info in this case) that they are willing to put in here???
The Forum has been a wonderful tool for "Me" in many ways, over the past almost 4 years. As I am honest and not afraid to receive what information is available here.
Man, I could tell you a cute story about how I was united with some friends (who were also on the road)in Oregon this past summer, only because of a couple of great folks here on the Forum (forgot my email password while travelling in a foreign country).... like it says in the bible "Ask and ye shall receive" I was rewarded for my membership into this great community.
And "No" it is never my intention to speak for the majority here when I post a comment. That is why I sign our names to the end of ever post I make....and if it something that Sandi may have not been willing to post , then I only sign my name.
I really hate responding to a post where the poster has not even had the courtesy of sharing there "First" name.
Once again, I feel one can only get as much out of something as they are willing to put in??
As for becoming a Moderator on this Forum........I am already wearing too many hats in my life right now!
And I am afraid I may be too 'opinionated" to deal with some of the deadbeats that inevitably will come thru the Forum with their unanswerable questions.

Thanks Sharon for clarifying the Oklahoma thing for me, as I was not sure....and was in the middle of giving her that lead on the Trailer for sale in Oklahoma before I realized wasn't sure of the abbreviation for that state.
As it turned out it was a good lead then?
Whether she will follow up on it or not?????
Since we have met and you, know where my heart is (mostly on my sleeve) you do know that I do use the PM option almost as much as the public part of this forum to communicate private thoughts when necessary (you and I have exchanged many in the past.)
