I installed a 3" wide strip up the sides and across the bottom of the hatch. The 3" strip is attached with angle clips to the frame. The 3 inch strips lay over the exterior walls. The edge of the wall under the lift gate is covered with the same edging as the exterior roof to side wall trim. I didn't put the black cover over this portion, but I used a round bulb seal that come with double backed tape that is attached to the door and closes inside the channel of the trim. Haven't been in the rain yet, but I'm sure it'll work.

More tips: Use a construction adhesive called PL / Pro Line by
Locktite. It is a very strong and waterproof urethane formula. The caulk I suggest is also a urethane, Vulkem 116. I bought both at Lowes. Both will stick to metal and wood. The urethane is tenatious and you can paint and recaulk over the stuff. Not something you can do with silicone.

The construction adhesive cartridge leaked while I used it so I put it on the tire of the trailer. Later I took a 150+ mile trip. Amazing, the globs of PL were still stuck to the tire, just worn flat.

What really helps is some angle iron (aluminum) extending out the sides a bit. The more water that is away from the corner the better.
