Hardwood lump charcoal is probably the closest thing to true wood fire cooking while still flying under the radar. You can make it yourself.. Which might be a way to make your own wood OK to transport.

A little expensive but there is little cleanup and might get around the carry in camp firewood bans.

Seriously...............

The mouth watering deliciousness of wood stove cooking is in my opinion the fact that the food is cooked low and slow and can be kept warming for hours on an area of the stove that is just warm enough to maintain serving temp. Dutch oven cooking is much the same if done correctly. For the wood flavor to be a factor the food is directly exposed to the smoke. To get this effect I have often cooked on my weber grill using the indirect method to get a slow deliberate cook for the smokey goodness.

When I was a Boy Scout leader, we learned to make a cardboard oven out of a cardboard box lined with foil, and some steel rods stuck thru the box bout mid way up, then about one inch off the bottom. Put a pan of biscuits, or a pizza, or an Apple Pie on the top rack, then a pie tin with a big scoop of wood coals on the bottom rack, close the box for 30 or 40 minutes, then enjoy the best smoked, baked, items you ever tasted! Yummy! Where is my box?

I think the best food I have tasted used pecan wood. Just my opinion.

When I'm smoking meats at home, I use hardwood charcoal as "the base" to which I add "flavor" wood. For pork, I tend to use peach and/or cherry. For beef, I use oak and/or pecan.

Not just Cali...

All New England states are doing it too. In CT its illegal to bring in any firewood (natural). ME actually does spot checks on campers at the first rest area on I-95 when entering the state. If it's not "kiln dried" you can't bring wood with you.

Moving wood with bugs, Asian Longhorn Beetles as an example, is doing serious damage to forests. It's a threat to the maple syrup industry for one example. Worcester MA is one area that is spending some major $$$ fighting the spread. They are removing thousands of beautiful maples in an effort to stop them.

Shadow Catcher wrote:Wood and fires in general can trigger an asthma attack which for me are potentially deadly. In one Tearjerkers gathering there was an inversion layer and so many smoldering fires I had serious problems. If you are going to have a fire learn to build one and don't leave it to smolder.
I now have a three stage 12V air purifier for inside the tear.

Last year in VT State Parks it was like that - low hanging smoke everywhere...

Unfortunately, they ask you to leave your wood at home to help stop the spread of bugs. Then they sell pine so wet it squirts sap when you try to split it.

Being a Boy Scout and A.F. Survival School Grad trained "pyro" even I was struggling to have a nice fire. :x

$5 a bundle for wet wood... It drains your wallet buying firewood faster than it does buying good beer now.

Sure doesn't help get folks to follow the rules and leave their wood at home either.

Although the motives seem valid , it still appears like it all comes down to the Money ... Wet firewood for 5 bucks ... Bugs and diseases are spread wherever mankind moves ... been like that since our ancestors first walked out of Africa with their fleas .... hahahaha

Bedbugs would be a good example ... I hear that’s epidemic in the east ... yet nobody checks your bedding huh ... :NC

I have apple trees and an apricot, all of which only get pruned about every other year. That gives me some fairly thick branches. The other trees I deal with are ponderosa pines, and after almost a decade of mostly drought conditions, they dry enough to burn even alive and standing. Anyway, in the summer when I Weber-Kettle dinner in the back yard, I toss a few small logs into the kettle when we are done, let them start burning, then close the intake and top draft vents and let the fire go out. The outside of the logs are charred, the wood is dry, dry, dry, and it passes the "no virgin wood" test at camp sites. Oh, ponderosa pine is a victim/host to the dreaded pine bark beetle that is denuding the western mountains, but ponderosa bark doesn't burn anyway, so that is peeled off before charring anyway, ensuring that there are no surviving PBBs on the charred logs.

Thought of this thread as I pondered getting a Solo Stove Campfire. http://www.solostove.com/solo-stove-campfire/

While I really like campfires & do agree wood fire cooking can make for some tastier meals, I just don't like making, maintaining or being the responsible for fully extinguishing more traditional campfires. Also, don't like finding/buying/providing the proper wood. What I like is the look & heat of fire with a bit of the woody aroma, but minimal smoke. While I don't object to the propane campfire products, am thinking I could really enjoy a small, woodfire version of this & the Solo Stove Campfire looks like it might do the trick without taking up much space. It can also burn pine cones & gum balls, which seem to be everywhere in our area. Likely not something for a crowd to gather around but looks good for a cozy, little, well-contained campfire.

Has anyone tried one of these?

Hmmm, I think I'll build a rocket stove and try wood pellets as fuel. I could carry wood pellets in a bucket with lid for dry fuel.

Might you not given their use in pellet smokers/grills?
