Teardrop week 8
It has been some time since my last progress report. That's due to the fact that I messed up and wanted to fix it before I said anything, mostly because I didn't want to declare my idiocrity, however inevitable.

Waltzing into any large project without a plan will eventually come back to get you, I know that now. I reached the point of constructing my hatch and I got stuck. I was clueless on how I was going to make it work. The problem is that the trim on my countertop extends nearly to the edge of my walls, leaving little room for vertical spars to support the hatch. So, for a few days I researched the issue. However, most people building teardrops account for this issue before they even begin. My solution: avoid the issue.

I decided to take a break for a week and work on a smaller project. I ended up making a chess set box (also with no plans) and it turned out okay.

But when that project came to a close, my issue was still present. Although, it give me time to arrive at an apiphany.

I realized that I could cut the spars to the curve, then notch out the space needed for the trim. This, of course, made the wood very weak, but I was able to beef up the sectioned out area by gluing more wood to either side of the spar.

This gives the curves (hopefully) enough durability to maintain their structure when I add the exterior skin to it.

On the outer spars, I glued a slim strip that will help to seal out the weather when closed.

Now, I have to wait for my 4' hurricane hinge to Come in the mail so I can finish up my measurements. Once that is done, I will glue/screw in the horizontal spars and add the exterior skin.

Problem averted, for now.

Until next time,

Hank

Well, we have all done something similar on our builds so don't worry about it. You have made it further in 8 weeks then some people do in a year. Just plug along and see if you can get her all finished and ready to camp.

I appreciate the encouragement

Oh yeah, also I put in a floor of cherry MDF, I'm pretty happy with it. And here is an update on what the painting looks like

So we were graced with a few warm enough days to bend my roof. Unfortunately, I got impatient and it broke on the curve. To solve that, I cut the roof with a skills and a straight edge just above where it snapped. I also skinned the galley (so many clamps) and the sides. I used about four tubes of liquid nails and a cup handfuls of finishing nails.

Next step is to build my tongue box and start tondo trim work. also I need to figure out the door.

How do I protect my wood? I am planning on using several coats CPES and I don't want to cover it with metal at all. How, exactly, does that coating process go? Can I put my trim, doors, and hatch on before I treat the wood, or should I start putting on CPES now?

I'm still bending the front part of the roof, so i still have some time to figure out how to waterproof everything. lots of questions.

Wood treatment before applying any other products. You can NOT
guarantee no leakage around a seal or caulking.

It seems like at the word epoxy everyone seems to run for the hills. But I was directed to some high quality oil sealant, so I am going to try that.

Great progress!
Looks like you are learning lots  and at your current rate you will be ready for the 2016 camping season. ;)
Just in time to start thinking about your second build.

Make sure you seal everything really well, especially the ends as that is where water gets in the easiest. CPES is good but you do need to put something over that as it is not UV resistant.

What UV resistant products can you use that will soak in on top of the CPES?

I don't think there are any. Whatever you use will simply seal over what is under to give UV protection. A very light sanding followed by a wipe-off cleaning before applying each coating will help give the over-coating "teeth" to hold; but that is all that I know to do. If you purchase CPES, ask the RotDoctor or whomever you buy from how long to wait before over-coating. It's not too awfully long; but, I can't remember how long it takes for it to cure and not off-gas between the coatings, which is what you don't want.

Wooden boat builders commonly coat epoxy —and CPES is epoxy of course-- with a couple of coats of high quality UV resistant varnish. There are a few people that have had excellent luck with oil based house paint that hasn't had the pigment added (it's clear).

Unthickened epoxy or thinned polyurethane will soak in. Epoxy is superior but expensive compared to poly. As everyone will mention, the edges are very important to get soaked. UV protection is best when the sun can't reach the base so a high bond oil primer followed by your color coat would be fine. I used white rustoleum for sun reflectivity and water resistance. My roof eventually was coated with a solvent based white elastomeric roof coating. Man, is that stuff reflective. Wear the darkest sun glasses you can find when/if you put it on. The super white keeps a camper very cool in the sun.
