Guess and check

I've put on four coats of FLOOD's cwf oil finish. It really brought out the grain in the ply and I'm really happy with the look. It also seems to soak in really well, but will see about how it holds up in the rain. I plan on continuing to apply it until the gallon is gone, then put some UV protection on top of that. Here is what it looks like

Looks good! I'm not familiar with Floods Oil Finish, but I don't think an oil finish, as an only finish is a good idea. If you continue to build more and more coats of oil, you may have trouble getting a Polyurethane like Minwax Helmsman (UV) to bond. Most good finishes need to penetrate the wood some to bond. Just something to think about.

I was hesitant because of that reason, but the "wood treatment guy" at Menards and Home Depot both suggested this stuff. They said that it would soak in better. It was also only 20 dollars, so I figured it couldn't hurt. We'll see how it goes

Very true! I've been using wood blocks this whole time. I should have got some on Black Friday. Admittedly, I'm just stingy.

My build was initially a brown stain , but then I decided to paint over it with white exterior to cut down on the solar heat load.

Looks good! Are you planning on doing some type of edge trim to cover the raw edges? Maybe some aluminum angle or flat stock or something to keep the water out & prevent it from soaking in to start delamination. The edge of the wood is where there can be trouble.

I am planning on using wood trim all the way around with a clear caulk sealant in the cracks.

Today I got the skylight up, one side of the hurricane hinge on, and the aluminum front tacked. I don't know if you guys felt his, but that aluminum film covering is just screaming to be pulled off.

My family used to own a local tool shop that started generations ago. All of the cousins got to be in the commercials and everything, but when my great grandpa died 10 years ago, my grandpa sold the store. Today in the school wood shop I found an old broken air compressor that still has the puckett tools and fasteners sticker on it. I guess the school used to buy all their tools there. It's cool to know that many of the tools I've been using came from my great grandpa's shop!!

The hurricane hinge is on! I know it looks pretty sloppy, but the 1/4 inch offset wasn't quite enough, so I just put a spacer in there and sealed it up.

Normally you extend the hinge a quarter of an inch over on each side so water runs away from gaps.

You are doing a great job.

I would take this picture and post in under Teardrop Construction Tips & Techniques and they will walk you through how to fix it.
You will have water running down in a rain. So you have to figure out how to catch the rain or extend the parts and seal the hatch.

One fix would be to cap the hinge with a rubber strip of pond liner material (EPDM rubber that is UV resistant) and let that run long. Do a search on hurricane hinges or rain coming into hatches and you will see what we are talking about.

Don't feel bad. Many have made this mistake and depending on the slope at your hinge location some even have water come thru their Hurricane hinges and resort to rubber seals or caps.
