Round window or hatch from a Gamma Lid

Postby Pmullen503 » Fri Dec 18, 2015 9:53 pm

I got this idea from Rowerwet who used a Gamma seal lid http://www.gamma2.net/icon-GSL.htm to make a round window. See here http://www.tnttt.com/gallery/album.php?album_id=4186

I thought it was a great idea and wondered if you could use a section of a 5 gallon pail for the rim on the other side.

Trim off the flared part of the ring.

Trim the off top of a 5 gallon pail. This is about 1.75" high. The Gamma seal ring just fits inside of it. Right now the distance between the two rings is 2" with an overlap of about 1/4". I can trim another 3/8" off the Gamma seal to get more overlap and still fit my 2" thick walls.

There isn't room as is to sandwich screening in between the two rings, I think you'd have to make a screen with a wooden frame. Of course you can't see through it with the lid in place but I have an application this would be perfect for. It would make a nice hatch as well.

I have a bucket like you show and it might work if you like a bucket lid inside your teardrop.
Here's a picture of a good friends teardrop that he used aluminum pie plates to fashion a vented glass window, including the screen.

He once explained what he did, unfortunately I don't remember how he made them, maybe you could figure it out, maybe not.
It appears there is a wooden outer ring.
He once told me he made a living designing things that worked.
If you really like this idea I could give him a call and find out how he made them.

I was really looking for a idea for an easy to make, air and water tight hatchway between two compartments in a foamy. This would work well for that. I think for a window you'd want a separate clear pane and maybe just screw the lid on for travel or storage.
