design (ratios)

Postby Poorlytiedfly » Mon Dec 21, 2015 4:31 pm

So I have now purchased my trailer base - a 63"x128" custom 2" tube welded sandrail trailer for $250!!!

This is what I will be designing my trailer around. My new issue is that with the length at 128" and wanting to try to keep to a 4' side wall height for ease of construction - my mock ups look way too long and low. Is there a ratio of length to height that you have found to work?

I plan to go with a higher than 4' sidewall - just wanted to hear if there is some conventional wisdom as to how high to make them in relation to the length for a good overall design.

I would say what ever works for you. There is no real set in stone size for a teardrop. It is what ever looks good to you. May be you can not cover the frame with the sides and run the bottom of the front and back wall vertical to make the sides look a little taller. The extra length will be nice give you a bigger galley counter.

I agree with KennethW. It's whatever looks good to you. If you are going higher than 4' anyway, just keep playing with it on paper until you get the look that you want. Then go for it.

Depending on what kind of tubing was used, and how the axle is mounted, you could cut the frame to the length you desire. 2x2 square .120 could be cut with a circular saw and a metal blade. You could alter it to fit your needs. JMHO.

Learn sketchup. There are some good tear drop specific videos on youtube that are really helpful. What you are building is only about ~20" longer than mine. Check out the "profile critique" thread in here.
