With the Astroliner ready to paint but the painting put on a temporary hold, our attentions move to the interior. All the puzzle pieces have been cut from 1/4" Marine grade Luan and dry fit on the inner walls. We decided to use paneling moulding in the seams between each piece to finish it out. Problem is, paneling is about 3/32" thinner than Luan, therefore the moulding won't slip over the edge. To correct this I routed a 1" groove on the backside of each piece to accommodate the trim. It wasn't a super accurate method but works pretty good nonetheless. Tomorrow I'll work on filling some knots and grain imperfections with some 3M Platinum and get them prepped to prime. Spraying 2k Urethane over wood is challenging but the finished result is amazing. Then each panel will be ready for the basecoat / clearcoat finish.

Is the moulding like a plastic C section?

Glad to hear you are making progress! over the holidays!
Wish I was.....But have had my son and family (two grand daughters) here for Christmas. (5 days)
And after 3 hours of plowing snow, I came in to get drunk and watch the Seahawk Game. They have gone to a blended family party at the "Beach House"

Anyone else here ever painted plywood with automotive paint?

Use a good auto high build primer on it! Let it sit for a few days. Sand and paint1!
If you used a "proper" sealer. you should have no problem.
Kermit will get some attention in the next two days!!!!

Anyone else here ever painted plywood with automotive paint?

Also, I believe that Gaston used automotive paint but I'm not certain whether he painted on plywood or something else. (I believe he is/was a professional auto painter.) It would take quite a bit of work to find his build as it was about 7(?) years ago. Some people on tnttt still keep in contact with him and maybe one of them will pipe up with more information...dunno.

A number of people have used automotive clear coat over their solid paint, on plywood. The best tnttt expert on that would be Doug Hodder. Also, Doug was around when Gaston was building his teardrop, so he might know about that one as well. You might sent him a PM. In case I have Gaston's member name wrong or someone needs an extra memory trigger, his was a deep purple color, made to match his deep purple PT Cruiser tow vehicle. He had a really bad accident with the teardrop and repaired it, using a combination of some left-over purple on top and some silver color paint on the sides. I think he still comes to the International Redwoods Gatherings (IRG) but I haven't seen him on the forum for a number of years.

I've used 2k Urethane primer on wood molds and plugs. The first coat swells the grain. Then sanded with 220 and more coats. 400 final sand and than top coated with gelcoat. But in this case I'm using bc/cc. That's the new territory I'm venturing into.
