Gluing Tyvek on foam?

Postby Don L. » Thu Jan 07, 2016 12:47 pm

Hi,

My first post here and I have very much appreciated everyone's stories and advice. I have been reading a lot the past couple of weeks. In fact it is because of everone's shared experiences building with foam that I have just bought a trailer frame to begin my first build.

I did a quick search to see if anyone has used tyvek as a skin on foam and didn't see anything so I just wanted to ask "has anyone had any experience with it"?
I have just glued a small sample of tyvek to foam using regular carpenters glue to see if it holds. I have heard of tyvek being glued in other applications but I have no direct experience of that.
I'll post my results when it dries. I guess I should also do a paint and primer test!

I have to say, in my experience, tyvek won't be a good skin. Getting it to stay bonded will be a problem.
TBII is a better glue than carpenter glue. On my kayak I used remnant fabric for parts of the skin and TBII. One section is a poly blend, ever since I started using it the fabric has been blistering.
You want a natural fiber that will absorb the glue for a good bond.

Tyvek is a plastic similar to a tarp material. It's a water and air barrier but allows water vapor to pass through. The material is very hard to get adhesion to. Even the $10 a roll tape doesn't stick as well as it should.
It's not the material I would use. I'd prefer to use fiberglass but that's me as when I think sandwich that's what I think from working on boats.

Thanks for the comments. I think I am coming back around to the canvas and titebond2 idea. It has more proven results.

Cheers!
