Tiny Dehumidifier

Postby SPLAT » Fri Jan 01, 2016 4:29 pm

I have searched and searched but have not found a trailer sized dehumidifier. Living on the coast with an average rainfall of 65 inches makes it interesting. Leave a car undriven for a month or two and come back to find a spectacular array of mold and mildew.

I have tried DampRid and other things in a package, but they don't seem to really cut it... I also don't want to mount an air conditioner on my Tear

Is there and RV or Travel trailer sized dehumidifier?

Im sure ive seen one somewhere,im rattling my brain trying to remember where.
One thought though is those big bag things that hang on a coathanger in a wardrobe.
Not sure that they are called but they absorb water and can hold liters of it befor emptying them

I have no experience with them, but a search on Amazon for "tiny dehumidifier" turns up several options.

You can also try searching for "mini dehumidifier". Am in the market for one for my camper, also. Haven't made a decision yet. Please let us know if you find a good unit.

Davis Instruments out Hayward, Calif. (www.davisnet.com) makes 2 units that they call air-dryr's for trailer use. A Air-Dryr 500 and a Air-Dryr 1000 - the 500 for up to 500 square feet and the 1000 for up to 1000 square feet of living space. The 500 is a 70 watt unit and the 1000 use 130 watts. I am using the 500 in my teardrop and the humidity stays between 40 to 55% here on the upper "wet" coast of Washington - Camano Island, about 700 feet from the water, looking west across to Whidbey Island. The temp out side here is 31 right now with inside temp of the trailer at 42 degrees with the humidity at 49%. (I have a Acurite brand inside/outside temp/humidity gauge from W-M to keep an eye on what's going on in the trailer from inside the house during the winter months.) I found the 1000 model at Camping World and the 500 on Amazon for about $50 if I remember right. I also keep 2 chemical air dryer tubs inside to collect moisture also. These units are basically heaters that keep the inside air warm using the same idea behind the thought of putting a light bulb like mom used to do for keeping the washer from freezing.

The GoldenRod Dehumidifier is kind of the standard in gun-safe dehumidifiers. It is a rod that you plug into A/C power and it heats up just enough to keep the moisture out. I've used them in safes, stored cars, and campers and boats.

The non-electric stufff HumiDry and DampRid work very well in enclosed things like safes and cars. I put a large DampRid in a cheap plastic box in the space and have to refill once a month in very humid sub-tropical environment.

Ive heard of people leaving a light bulb on inside, to keep them dry. During off season, slow times. (do not know if it works though)

A light bulb or "Goldenrod" will not actually dehumidify/remove moisture. I plan on purchasing a Prem-i-air Rechargeable Dehumidifier http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0007D99B6/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1PCLG3Q79O80Y&coliid=I1MA6RGH9GYHTV and will get a humidity monitor and find out if it works.

Correct. These all work by raising the temperature slightly, which raises the dew point and lowers the relative humidity so water doesn't condense. Whatever. It works.
I'll burn that bridge when I come to it.
