Never heard "plum" but doesn't the term "plug" nickel come from the use of the punch out plugs in electrical boxes, being used as nickels in vending machines and parking meters????

Worked for me (not always) when I was a kid. We would go to houses being built and pick them up off the floors, file the little tit off to make em flat and put them in the candy bar/soda pop machines.

Sometimes they'd work and a lot of times not.....but then again most vending machines even today only work sometimes with real money.
