Mogo Freedom

Postby Docwyoming » Mon Jan 25, 2016 5:44 pm

I was wondering if I could get some help/advice here. I've been wanting to build my own teardrop, but my wife prefers this design: The Mogo Freedom.

Image

I'm gonna do a build on my own (they run over 10k and they aren't even available yet) but I am trying to work out if this has a frame or if it was just built by connecting the walls directly without a frame:

I hope this is close enough to a teardrop to warrant posting here, thanks!

It looks like it has a frame under the box. At least a minimal frame as it has shock absorbers bolted to it. For a DIY job, you could use the Ultralight chassis (http://www.angib.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/t ... tear57.htm ) as long as you build light. Otherwise any light duty chassis would work.

Thank you! I couldn't make up my mind what sort of frame it had.

I am going to build it to about the scale of a teardrop 8 x 5 feet, with a low height, should be 5 feet tops. I might need a bigger trailer for it. My question really was on the building of the trailer itself, do those walls attach to a frame or are they connected together without one?

I question the practicality of those huge doors. You have to open the whole thing to get up to go pee in the middle of the night! Not for me.

I would think about adding a small door . When you open the side there goes all your heated are cooled air .By leavening the side down a bear won't find it chewy on the out side Screamy on the in side.

You could put a small door, even a comercial teardrop one in the back.
I quite like the design but as said previously at night or when its cold youd want a small door aswell.
Be nice on a summer day with a bit of breeze with the walls down

Another interesting design. But I too like the idea of smaller doors for the reasons mentioned and for privacy.

Yes, that is not much of a trailer!
No Galley, No Storage, No Privacy! Might work as a commercial vending unit......but, there are no creature features here. Too Sparton!
Can't see how it would be comfortable, practical, or Fun to camp in??? :?

To answer your question, I think the frame is an A frame like the ultralight, but I think the walls attach to a "base" or bed for lack of a better description. A platform much like the floor of most teardrops.

Heres how my platform was built

then plywood glued and screwed on top of that. Yours would probably be very similar but on an A frame instead of a rectangular.

You could always build it on a rectangular just as well though
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

I fear you and your wife are not on the same page. You, obviously, want a comfortable enclosed sleeping area, interior storage, a rear galley and great looking little rig. Your wife, on the other hand, wants a see-through bed, no galley and a boxy look. Hmm, talk it over, "someone" may change their mind. Teardrops are beautiful and interesting......boxes, probably not.

Big doors also = Lots of bugs! I learned that the hard way and my door isn't even all that big. Particularly mosquitos (and black flies, deer flies, & noseeums) if you have to open the entire side at dusk/nighttime.

Hahaha! Yes, I agree, but there is something about teardrops she just doesn't like.... I think the mogo LOOKS nice, but I wonder how practical it will other than a hauling trailer.

Interesting multipurpose box.

A couple thoughts
Has your wife camped before. The box is just a box. Mobile storage unit that can allow you to sleep on a bed.
Downside of the design:
Large gull wing doors that will allow bugs to enter, heat and cooling to be lost, no means of cross ventilation, opening door from inside is most likely a challenge,
all galley items will have to be stored in totes in mogo or vehicle. I wonder how waterproof the gull wing doors will be in the future. Imagine traveling a two lane highway, rain storm with strong wind, and semi's on the other lane, water will find it's way in thru the rubber gull wing seals. Results in wet bedding and spoil the camping trip.

A cargo trailer would offer more options depending upon design configuration.

Good luck creating a unit that pleases both of you.

Actually, while I think most teardrop shaped trailers are more attractive, I still like the look of the Mogo Freedom. It has, I believe, storage under the bed & a privacy/screen curtain that attach to one of the gull wing doors. Neither of those are enough for me. It doesn't have a galley. It looks like it would become a big bug collector & would be very difficult to heat or cool if you keep opening & closing the doors. If the look & gull-wing doors are the style you like then there are ways to mitigate the storage, cooking & climate control issues. A bigger issue would seem to be designing & building multiple big doors that works easily enough to be opened & closed repeatedly each day.

If you are building it yourself then you can have inside storage & a galley. The door for the galley can be a gull-wing style to compliment the side doors. You could even build the under bed storage so it can slide out from the side like a drawer. Custom made canvas panels can be made for the door openings. Those panels could include windows & doors if you want, similar to a tent or popup trailer. Those can be left in place if you want so you don't need to do set up & take down each time, but could be rolled up, out of the way if you didn't want to use those. As for the gull-wing doors, I wonder if at least one side could be made with split doors so you only have to open have the side. Or perhaps you could have a small man door built in, a door within a door, like some garage doors.

Am not saying the Mogo style is one I'd choose but neither are some of the teardrop designs. Choose what works for you.
