General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

So, I came to teardrops from backpacking. I still love my packs, and the ability to go places no one else will/can because the only transport is your boots.

But I agree, some of the backpacking gear can be helpful to teardropers. The flip side though is that since I can measure my gear volume in cubic feet instead of cubic centimeters, I find the mentality of backpacking more useful (IE conserve space, make do with less, dual purpose gear is good etc)

Anytime you want to talk backpacking though, I'm in! :)

Part of the reason I backpack

I am a current backpacker and treardrop’er

Probably the best thing backpacking did was make me realize how little I need to be comfortable. The trailer adjustment (if there was any) easy with “backpacking mind set”.
Compared to backpacking, teardroping is a spacious luxury.

Most if not all the backpacking gear is useable in the trailer.

My future plans for extended trailer trips include taking a mini vacation from the trailer vacation. Meaning while traveling we will park the trailer and take a - kayak camping or backpacking trip for a night or two – then back to the trailer and continue vacation! Since the gear is similar – should be easy enough. I getting excited just thinking about it the vacations within the vacations. Top on my list is the Algonquin Provincial Park for a vacation within the vacation. For I have the gear but it’s just a cubicle dream while I am looking at a computer screen.

We canoe camped including a trip to Isle Royal, and in our Baja bug when we were first married but mostly tented with the kids as they grew up.

We went from canoeing the Boundary Waters to teardrop camping. The trailer was like staying in a motel. Soft bed that was not on the ground. Even had nice lighting at night with the on board 12v. We have enjoyed it very much and can continue to camp light and have a good time. I still use dehydrated food and some of the same equipment we packed into the BWCA.

Then my wife had a stroke. We are still able to do the same things. We do not backpack any more but now we walk and hike and it is good for Mrs. Bigwoods to get out and nothing beats the camp fire staring at night..

I still backpack a lot. If fact that's the reason I've never made it to a Walk the Winds gathering...'cause it happened on the same week I always take my annual mountain hike to the Tetons, Wind Rivers or other Colorado trails. I hike the Porkies in the UP 2-3 times a year and try to get up north Minnesota too. Can't forget the BWCA.

I was a backpacking boy scout, then I got into off roaring, which meant RVs, but I always liked the ability to travel and camp. I had a great time camping out of the back of a 67 Bronco, but i wanted a better bed. So now I've combined it all with a Jeep and a TD.
