Possible big changes in HF trailer line

Postby Graniterich » Thu Jan 28, 2016 7:11 pm

I just received my hf catalog for this month. If you look closely at the 1720 heavy duty trailer it now is a foldable model. There is no listing for the older style that many of us has used. My personal opinion (without seeing it) is this is not good news as obviously teardrops don't fold.

Not talking about the axle, the older 1720 heavy duty did not fold. In my view folding will be useless, and adds a new weakness.

If I remember correctly, way back at the turn of the century, ALL HF trailers folded ... and lots of folks built teardrops on them! ... they simply eliminated the folding feature when they assembled the frame (it ain't rocket science)! And, how can a folding feature be an "added new weakness" in an already marginal frame ... :? ...? (Sorry ... while I do acknowledge that lots & lots & lots of folks have joined the teardrop family as a result of HF chassis, I have a very poor opinion of their overall quality and suitability for a quality teardrop build! JMHO!)

Ok, sorry to bring it up, don't have experience with eliminating the folding feature. Didn't realize it was an option on assembly. Please ignore. Anything that allows more folks to get out there I am for. I do realize that they are looked down upon, but for some they are all they can afford.

The folding feature is just more hardware on the same frame. If you have a folding trailer you just leave off the hinges and bolt the back half on with the holes provided.
One might use the hinges for your hatch if you are doing a low cost build.

If you reinforce the tongue as is sorely needed just attach your 13 foot of 2x2 3/16 wall square tubing to each and every cross member and the folding issue is now a mute point ..
