Little Boxes

Postby Shadow Catcher » Sun Feb 07, 2016 1:59 pm

I have long said that plagiarism is the sincerest form of flattery and I hope I have provided my fair share of ideas. There are some of the most fertile imaginations represented in this forum than I have seen anywhere else, and rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, (I will if I have to) I felt it might be an idea to see if some one else has come up with an elegant solution.
I have been thinking of custom made boxes to fit on the shelves in Compass Rose. The ones available which we have been using, waste space, do not fit, there by wasting space, do not fit because of curvature of the front, there by wasting space... We have an assortment of boxes and bins that sort of fit maybe and slide around...
Ideas so far.
Three ply cardboard coated with something, would be a way to try out various arrangements and configuration inexpensively, assuming I can find the three ply cardboard.
Thin Luan plywood
Aluminum (expensive)
Plastic
OK looking for ideas here folks.

For those that just might remember the song by Malvina Reynolds written in 1962

No I do not remember that song. But maybe because I am of that era, that explains my need today to be different and do things my way.

Looking at Coroplast available in various colors and locally in Maume (near Toledo) and Home Depot in white.
The original song came about as a result of her seeing the post WWII mass produced housing built in if I remember correctly San Jose and the only difference was the color, I remember seeing them in the 60's.

I remember that song quite well as we, on occasion, bring up a verse or two.
All our galley storage is below the counter & drawers, we use about 6 clear plastic lidded shoe boxes for canned goods, etc..
They stack well and stay put since each box nests into the locking lid of the one below it.
The rest of our galley items sit directly on the floor and that works quite well for our needs.
Walmart has aisles of plastic boxes, in varying sizes, for any imagination to make use of.

I am not sure exactly what you want, but I've made a bunch of "apple crates" recently. Ends are 1x12 and sides are slats of whatever scrap I want to get rid of. No reason the ends have to be square so the slats can follow the curves.

Because of the curve on the front end of my trailer this was the solution I came up with for my clothing, toiletries, etc.

Fitted tubs with cloth, drawstring closure bags. Because my tubs have such low sides if they aren't kept full enough the bags can bounce out of the tub during transit (when full they stay put braced against the top and front of the trailer), but in a galley with the hatch closed I don't think you'd have that problem. I'd look for containers with sides as high as possible to fit the arc of your trailer and the bags will go the rest of the way up. The nice thing is you can sew the bags to be exactly as high as the amount of space you have available. A bit more of a pain to deal with once you're at your destination to use for kitchenware than storing clothes, but you could open the top of the bag and (with a container with higher sides) simply fold it down over the sides of the container until it's time to pack them up again.

About 30 years ago, we drove to Alaska up the Alcan highway. My grandparents in one van, and my parents with 3 kids in another. My grandfather had built a plywood cabinet that was full of cardboard boxes made from the cardboard bottoms from a case of soda. He added little wooden drawer pulls. After that trip it went in the shop where it carried tools and parts etc. Lasted a long long time.
It would be easier to be creative if I understood what size spaces we were looking at?
If the space is tall, then you might consider a luan frame work that could fit some boxes that you can find off the shelf.

If the curve is the main issue, then maybe something like this that gives you a secret hidey hole.

Secret hidey holes are good!

I made one behind a sheet of paneling in a van I owned. Stashing cash and important papers in a secure place while on the road pays off.

Shadow, if you are not planning on putting a lot of weight in the boxes why not make them out of foam? you can make them with curves to fit the space almost exactally. use glue and wood skewers to hold them together, once they are dry glue on material, almost any cotton material from sheets to T-shirts. old canvas any material. you could use the material to glue on and form a hinge too for a top. you can paint them with regular house paint , Go to home depot and see if they have 1/2 inch pink foam insulation, it comes in 4x8 sheets so have the major cuts figured out so you can get it into the car. you can cut with a razor knife. I know you have asthema and just to let you know you wont have problems with the glue but maybe the paint and your wife can do that part! Have fun ! :)

Mary, contents will include clothing inside the cabin (we have lots of cupboard space) and canned goods in the galley. Each of these inside cabinets have a shelf half way down. And yes we do have a couple of hidden hidey holes.
