Insulation question

trying to figure out if this would work good or if i would be better off with the green or pink boards.

The best boards are Dow Blue board.

They are also the hardest to find & most expensive.

Have you been happy with your ceiling insulation?

I am leaning in a certain direction for the cloaking device insulation. Waiting to see if I get any knowledgeable suggestions.

I don't see how you can get any qualified suggestions as no one here has the level of insulation that I have. So it would be pure guessing.

I'm not sure as you also have not stated your design temp or exact use or goals.

Mine was to have 100% solar cooling parked in over 100F temperature.

OTTCT posted about plastic cavity battens, and after researching them... originally used in NZ and Down Under, I found some here in the US.

I guess they would be used at the Top and Bottom of the wall to be insulated and as a thermal break on metal studs/ribs.




Would this help the Condensation Issue? How about helping with the insulation? The question I have is the movement of air or moisture up or down, is that helping the over all R value?


Again, I am trying to keep a black trailer cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter through layers, like a parfait. I could see an airspace between the outside wall and a reflective radiant layer with these battens allowing the heat to rise to the top and then being vented out of the roof.

Thoughts? Anyone!?

Expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) the stuff you linked to, is not as good as XPS (extruded polystyrene. XPS has higher R-value. The Lowe's page notes that EPS has greater R-value per dollar, but does not mention that XPS has more R-value per inch of thickness. I would think you want the most R per inch what with being a huge heat collector surface on the exterior. EPS is made of expanded foam beads, fused to gether with pressure and heat. XPS is 'solid' extruded closed cell foam. The color of XPS doesn't matter, it is just market identity with pink being trademarked by Owens-Corning.

FWIW, mythbusters tested a black car vs a white car a few years back. They had a 9 degree F difference IIRC. There was another study I recall with a black and a silver Honda had a interior difference of 10 F.

The idea behind the Cor-a-vent strips on a house is to enable a better rainscreen wall. The premise is that lap siding on a house is cose=metic, not a weatherproof barrier. It sheds most water to the outside. The airspace between the siding and the real wall has a couple of purposes; air venting and also in conjunction with reflective foil sheathing contributes to an effective radiant barrier. Radiant barriers need an air space to be effective. earlier you were indicating you might use some foil bubble radiant "insulation". The real science shows those can work but need an airspace. Without an airspace there is no radiant energy waves moving through the air. There is only contact, conductive heat transfer.

Back to cor-a-vent.... the horizontal vent strips are used at wall / siding tops and bottoms to permit the movement of air and restrict insect movement. It also lets water run out the bottom as sooner or later water does find its way behind the siding. The rain screen wall works really well in helping to prevent paint blistering on wood siding as it helps dry out the backside of the siding. If I was doing a house I would use that method; in fact we did. A trailer with an exterior metal skin is different.

Is this statement true at 60F,70F, 80F,90F, 100F,110F........??????? From my personal experience having again owned a BLACK AND WHITE CAR... there.is min of 25F differance.

Can anyone answer this for me. I've seen some posts where they used two sheets of 1/2" foam board and glued it together. Why not got with a 1" sheet instead?

Those covered cars with glass which could also probably means results with a all metal skinned trailer could be different. Probably worse, IMO. That is just an undocumented opinion so carries no weight at all. HAGD.

BUSTED - the link you gave in the headline, goes to a dead link, which does not have the information ....So you and MYTHBUSTERS are both busted.
On your second story which you claim you did not read here is the chart...showing 15-20 C difference.....

AGAIN a hell of a lot more than 10F..... more like 40 - 50F
Besides also owning a silver & WHITE are, the silver is already MUCH HOTTER vs white.

Graph is roof temperature. I thought the big concern was the interior air temperature?

The researchers had two cars in the sun for an hour, one black and the other silver, parked facing south, in Sacramento, California. The silver Honda Civic (shell SR 0.57) had a cabin air temperature of about 5-6°C (9-11°F) lower than an identical black car (shell SR 0.05).

Where does it say at what point the cabin air temp was measured ? Was it at the height of the heating cycle ? Was it at the low point of the cooling cycle ? Was it a average temperature between heating & cooling cycles?

I am clueless how you come to your conclusion based on the LIMITED given data ??

On a trailer my experience is inside temp tracks exterior temp.....SIMPLE the hotter the skin, the hotter the interior.

no doubt in my mind that my trailer will be hotter because it is black that is why i want to get good insulation.

I am not sure why no one is trying to deploy the MLI - multi-layered insulation? If it is good for ISS (International Space Station), why not try to deploy in trail insulation?
