Are their any CT homebrewers?

Postby SalsaDog » Thu Feb 26, 2015 1:10 pm

If so, sharing experiences and or tales would be fun. Some friends and I do a man camp every a year. During the camp,
we brew, ferment and consume a batch of brew. The stories I could tell.

Hmm, what about a homebrewing thread?

Last year at Pictured Rocks Nation Lake Shore, we brewed a 2.5 gallon batch of a west coast IPA. We brewed it over an
open fire. Fermented it in a creek draining into lake Superior and then force carbonated it. IMO, that is boondocking
hacking.

I'm a homebrewer also, but don't have a CT. And I don't think my 15-gallon brew system would fit in my 15ft standy. But, I really would like to be able to serve my beer on draft in the trailer, but keeping/getting it cold is problematic with only an icebox.

Brew on!

I am not quite either..... Have been planning a CT for about three years (waiting on available funds to do it right)....and have been researching homebrewing and helping other homebrewers for over two years....am now buying all the equipment I need for homebrewing. Will be brewing 2.5-3 gallon batches (5 gallon batches too much....only one at home that drinks beer).....will hopefully be posting about CT soon, but will be homebrewing (mostly stouts, porters and other dark beers) much sooner...

It's good to see their are some homebrewers here. I have been brewing ~14 years. I built an automated BIAB rig
3 years ago. I also have a PID controlled liquid fermentation chamber. Think much higher thermal coupling using
water versus air. The majority of brews are west coast hoppy ales, lambics, sours and saisons. I have a saison
dupont knockoff finishing up, which I stepped up the dregs of a 750ml bottle. I'm working on boot strap brewing
to fill in some time when boondocking. Last year, I brewed a pale ale using my coffee press as a mash tun.

10 peeled oranges cut into wedges
10 browned, soft apples cut into wedges
1 cup Sugar in the Raw
1 yeast packet
16 oz and 1 cup warm water
8 oz can of fruit cocktail
1 packet of raisins

1. Combine the fruit cocktail, apples, raisins and oranges in a 1-gallon Ziploc bag and mash them up taking care to not pop the bag. Once the fruit is beaten into a pulp, add the raw sugar and mix.

2. Add the 16 ounces of warm water to the bag and then seal it. Submerge the sealed bag in a sink of warm water for 15 minutes.

3. In a bowl mix the yeast packet with a cup of warm water and 3 teaspoons of raw sugar and wait til it froths up. Add this to the bag of mushy fruit then store in a dark place.

4. Every day for seven to eight days pour warm water (not hot) over the bag then wrap it in a towel and store. Never allow the bag to cool, else the yeast will die.

5. As part of the fermenting process, the bag will bloat up from the carbon dioxide so you’ll need to burp it by opening the bag and releasing the carbon dioxide. Repeat this process every day until there’s no longer any bloating.

6. Filter the contents through a cheesecloth. Enjoy on the rocks or do like Crouch: “I use some bitters since I’m not locked up anymore.”

I need to ask why?

I spent the month of March camping in the National Forests in Arizona. I made two one gallon batches of IPA. It
worked out well. IMO, brewing in the wilds is great when you have extra time on your hands. I find great satisfaction
in being resourceful and leaving no trace.
