Bed to bench seat

Postby Duf11 » Sun Mar 13, 2016 8:33 pm

Hi All,
I am looking at an easy convertible bed to a bench seat. I have seen several on the web but cannot get a feel for where to get one/make one for the TD I am going to build. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

I'd imagine any upholstery shop can do it for you.

I bought my tear from a fellow in Oregon, one man shop, the mattress he offered was too expensive for me but it was in three pieces.

Laid out it is a queen but lift out two smaller sections, push the larger one to the back wall and drop the smaller ones down to become the backing part and you had what effectively was a bench seat.

I have no idea about the dimensions of each one tho...you could do a card board mock up for l x w and then i'd get some quotes.

I've had some furniture upholstered and there can be quite a difference from shop to shop.
If price is a concern stay away from the design type places that specialize in furniture and try the marine/RV places first, then the auto upholstery ones next.

hope this helps.

The VW camping world is full of ideas for what your after. In the uk, these are called rock & roll beds... Maybe try a search for that online, or try a VW forum... I'm sure plenty of folk will have made their own and be happy to share their ideas,..

Gaucho may also be useful as a search term. Our wonderful host had a screenshot of a 3D model of one in one of his standy design threads a few years back.

Tom

I picked up a conversion van 3rd seat at a junk shop for $75.00 last month for the caboose.

I slept several nights in OUR conversion van ( way back when ) and it was always quite comfortable.

Check the junk yards !

I built one for a van we had many years ago. Mine was pretty simple and worked well. the base was two piece and hinged along the edge. the legs that supported the fold out section were hinged at the top of the fold out and simply stood vertical when opened up. We bought some foam and my wife made a removable cover for them so they could be washed. Do try and make the couch/bed a normal size so that sheets, blankets etc can be purchased easily.

Where my setup had a permanent base with storage, my friend built one that then entire thing could fold up so that he could put it against the wall of his cargo trailer/camper. This allowed him to roll his motorbike into the trailer for transport. Then when he gets to his camp area, he rolls out the bike and sets up his camper. It really works great and I am thinking of doing something similar. Sorry no pictures though.
