Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

5x8 racetrack camper/boondocker

Postby Trevor57 » Fri Feb 19, 2016 11:47 pm

Finally started to convert my new (to me) trailer. The starting platform is a 5x8 ct, used to haul motorcycles, and store excess stuff. In good shape, but did not have a service door. I figured it was cheap enough, that I could buy a door and still be a good deal. Here is the night I picked it up.

Image

I found a door on ebay that was a perfect fit, and at $100 shipped, I jumped on it. The color is wrong, but I can fix that. Between the garbage weather we have been having, my other project, and work, etc. I opted to have a local shop install the door instead of doing it myself. It turned out great, and wasn't too costly. Also I made some good progress on my project car/tow vehicle #2.

Out with the old...

And here is the new door.

Tonight we got the interior gutted to begin wiring, and insulating the trailer. The best helper to have in a small trailer is 4'3"

Image

I have a pair of renogy 100 watt solar panels that fit like a glove on the roof. They are not installed yet, but I wanted to see how they fit.

Image

Here is my table with about half the stuff I will be putting in the trailer. Not super interesting, but why not.

Image

At the end of the night it looked like this. This is my trailer. There are many like it, but this one is mine.

Image

Tomorrow, I hope to get some wiring in, and insulation. I have two months to finish this project, as I have a weekend planned to use it April 22.

It looks like you've got a good jump on it already. I am going to build a 6' X 10' enclosed trailer. Mine came with a side door but I am building or buying one. I don't know yet.

Good luck,

Here is a shot of the face frame for the cabinet. This will be the front of the trailer.

The back of the cabinet as it is coming together.

Mostly finished

I stained the pieces apart from the face frame, and was glad i started with the tv cabinet. I changed my mind about the color, and switched after staining the first part, but it will not matter. It will be hidden by a tv.

Some pics of the wires being pulled.

Also added this tongue box from harbor freight. I need to photograph the battery in there too. The wires are 8ga, that run through a waterproof conduit from home depot.

Entertainment cabinet installed.

Wired up. Bluetooth stereo, watt meter, and fuses.

Tv in.

Shot of the exterior lights. Easily see 100ft+ in front of trailer, and for under 3 amps of current draw. Thanks to led lights!

Hope to get doors done this week, and some other loose ends.

Thank you. I have some 3w "porch lights" on mine but plan on adding these exact same lights for increased output.
