We are always hauling wood for campfire's or buying it at the site. These look like a thrifty alternative that may in fact, be cheaper, more efficient AND environmentally sound!

Repose Reusable Mesh Logs http://reposenow.com/ are filled with wood pellets, which seem like they would be easier and cleaner! to haul in the tear. The baskets nest together for storage. Might be worth checking out!



PS - the stand in the second pic looks like a satellite dish DO stand!

I was thinking of trying a stainless steel colander. Maybe with a little crush to the colander to make more of a donut shape fire.
Any thoughts?

After pricing heavy stainless steel mesh, these seem to be a pretty good deal.
Mesh steel is not an easy thing to work with.

That is what I thought. Given all my other projects, maybe I will just buy one set to have around.

You'd have to lug around a 40# bag of pellets if you wanted more fires.
They just don't start with a simple match.
I buy a ton (50 bags) every year for the shop pellet stove.
They work great out there but can smoke some on start up so I start with wood planer shavings instead of the self igniter.
For camping, give me a propane fire ring, cleaner and the fuel is cheaper than pellets.
Propane fires are allowed in more places than wood fires.

Yeah, you're right, with my time added I'd likely end up in the hole. Now if I happen to come across some of the mesh at the scrap metal dealer...

Thanks for the kudo's Greg.
Actually with a wood stove any airborne dust would land on the hot surfaces and smoke up the place.
I tried a 220 electric heater and the dust killed it, the pellet stove is great.
I do get what they call clinkers, where some pellets won't burn, they kind of end up looking like charcoal pellets.

I got a colander and a bag of pellets and tried it with 2 cups of pellets it burned Ok(rather small fire as expected).
Now tonight I may try a full colander and see what happens.
May or may may not need a small collar for draft.
I just get to in to trying things But this is a low cost thing $15 with pellets. That is less then 2 small wet bundles to park wood. And a lot easier to light.

I live in and across the street from pine forest (and dear step-dad has more pines in his yard), so the kids and I collect pine cones for kindling every year. (In fact, we'll be raking the yard this coming week during spring break to reduce fire danger, so I'll be sacking up some more cones in the next few days.) I start my pellet stove with a pine cone in the pellet tray, squirt it with hand sanitizer, light it, and start the pellets feeding. I suspect the same will work for pellets in one of these "logs" (or in the colander DIY version).

I am thinking of ordering a bigger colander like this or bigger.

I am also going to take a metal rod and bend all the hole in the colander so the intake air will spin around to make a tornado effect.
