I need your GREAT idea!

Postby Poorlytiedfly » Wed Mar 30, 2016 7:40 am

My build is coming along and one detail/design feature has me frustrated... What should be on the backside of my TV swivel? My design is a bit different than most so here are some pics. You can see that my 28" LCD TV will be mounted on a swivel to make it viewable from either the galley or the cabin area. The side of the mount with the 1.5" diameter hole in it (for TV wiring) isn't my issue - what do I do on the clear, flat backside of this mount? I want my TD to look good and well thought out and this seems like some good, useable space. My wife suggested something like a spice rack or utensil hanging area which would look fine when it is facing the galley area but I don't want kitchen stuff on the cabin wall when it is rotated... A friend suggested I somehow use my trailers name/logo artwork in that space maybe as a watercolor stained into the birch before finishing.... Any other ideas?

Both ideas are good. The chance you will ever see the spice rack in the cabin when the TV is flipped into the galley are slim because you will be out side watching it. So I don't see why you could not use that space for spices or some thing useful in what is already a small kitchen.

one other issue with the spice rack idea though is that those items wouldn't be easily available if you have the TV turned out... you would have to go inside to get them. Not a huge deal but I think I am still looking for something different.

Again, you will not be using the kitchen related stuff while the TV is facing the Galley.....nor will you be in the cabin.
But, for the sake of "Show" .......wives love mirrors and vanity lights!
And as you already have wires running into your hollow swivel door; it would be very easy to incorporate a light bar or strip light that would be off great use on either side, plus a three piece hinged mirror with the backside framed or painted like a window looking out on your landscape (picture) when closed. Do you follow?
Can't wait to see what you decide on. ;)

PS
I am having a similar frustration with what to mount on the inside of my hatch lid on Kermit.
Speakers, lights , upholstery,.....they all add up to weight and extra wiring???

You can never have too much storage I vote for an enclose storage cupboard.

Since you are already running electricity to it for the TV, a charging station for electronics? little pocket/shelf for phones or tablets?

Just a thought

First, you are doing a beautiful job on your teardrop. Keep up the good work!
 Now, about the backside of that pivoting TV screen, I vote for a narrow cabinet, about the depth of your wallet or cellphone or the equivalent of your home's medicine cabinet. I know you've built a place for charging, etc, but the depth I describe allows you to be flexible in whatever you decide to put in the cabinet. You might even be able to simply mount an actual mirrored medicine cabinet there; but, from the looks of your skills, I think you can make something much, much better. Make shelves inside and add a lightweight, thin door in front or whatever. Since it's a pivot wall, be certain that the little cabinet does not impede the turning. Depending on the cabinet door style, with your TV mounted on a swivel, you can turn the TV wall part way and be able to access the cabinet on the back, without turning it the entire way, especially if you make sliding doors on that little cabinet. You may find that you like using that pivot opening in the morning, to make your coffee/tea/hot chocolate on the galley counter and be able to drink it in bed while you slowly awaken to the day, especially if it's cold outside! If you decide to do that, you may want to stock the little cabinet with cocoa packets, tea bags and tea-bag style coffee bags, powdered creamer, and sugar packets as well as a few spices. Whatever you decide, you'll find the best use for it with time. But, you're right! It would be a shame not to take advantage of the flat back of that TV wall.
