I am designing a foamie hybrid/standie/canvas skin trailer for a couple kids and two adults. I've been working on the design for a while now, and feel pretty good about where we're heading. Thanks to the tips from last weeks balance question, I moved a few things around and here is what I'm going to start building any day now.
As I posted in the link above, I purchased a homemade utility for a killer price, but the axle position isn't ideal. But with a cooler and our water tank directly over the axle, I am hoping this will pull nicely. We'll also have a popup canopy and bikes stored inside over the axles while towing. The axle is currently overslung but I am planning on moving that above the springs because my TV is rather low and I'd like to bring the overall profile down a few inches to make it a better tow anyhow. As far as conveniences, we just want a pump faucet from water tanks, and minimal electronics. Opted to build a foam lined drawer to keep our cooler in rather than put in a fridge or anything fancy like that.
I would love for any feedback from those who are willing to offer.
This is what our profile will look like.
As you can see, the axle is at 47% from the rear, it's positioned really similar to most popup trailers I've seen. The sketch is with the axles overslung, so that will be changing in the next few weeks. I haven't put in any details for window placement or anything like that. Those sorts of things will depend on what I salvage so I didn't bother to draw them in just yet.
Here's the interior.
Berth that converts to a single bed up front, storage under the seats. Galley across from the door, simple clean water tank that pumps into the faucet, then drains into a dirty water tank. I do not camp anywhere with water hook ups so we'll be self-contained. Inside to the left of the door will be a wardrobe on top and a drawer for a cooler on the bottom, drawer will be lined with foam to boost the cooler's performance. And obviously a twin over full bunk that will be permanent. I can't stand having to make up the bed over and over and we road trip for days at a time, moving to different campgrounds, which is why I'm giving up our tent life for a trailer. And why I don't want a convertible dinette to make up every night.
And a top view of the layout (cooler slide out is in the open position).
Haven't finished with all the detail that will go into it, but this is my vision and somewhere to start from.
Now if only I could find the time to finish knocking off the rust from the trailer frame and get it painted so I can start the build. But this is what I had to deal with this morning, so didn't get in any trailer time today.
Funny how I haven't even really gotten started and yet I'm already finding things that delay the build!
Anyhow, I'm happy to be here and hoping for feedback/suggestions to the designs above.
