7 × 20 Aluminum

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

7 × 20 Aluminum

Postby Thumbbilly » Mon Apr 04, 2016 7:30 am

Just purchased a 7x20 + 5 v-nose snowmobile trailer with 7ft interior. Primary use with be hauling Polaris Rangers. The wife and I plan on doing some camping in it this summer. This will be a pretty basic conversion, nothing real complex. After watching some of the builds on here, I thought I would share mine. All helpful comments and questions are welcome.

That is a very nice trailer. I'm officially jealous!

I couldn't tell, but could you say what is series is your pickup and how did it tow the trailer? I've been considering a 7'x18' or 7'x20' but am wondering how my F-150 will tow it. (I've got the 5.0 liter engine with factory tow package and 3.55 gear ratio.)

Take care,
Tom

In the photo it is loaded with two Polaris Ranger midsize 570's. The trailer weighed 5030lbs with 700 lbs tongue weight. The truck is a 2015 Silverado 1500 with the 5.3 motor. It has the tow package and is rated at 9200lbs. I have only pulled short distances, but at 60mph it did just fine. I feel you will be more than capable to pull either of the trailers you have mentioned.

So this weekend I purchased paint for the floor. Now to wait for it to warm up enough to get the job done. I am waiting for insulation board to go on sale so I can make that purchase. I do have a question though. What should I use for ceiling material? Should I buy the fiberglass reinforced vinyl panels that you would use in a bathroom, or is there something better out there?

To cover my ceiling after insulating and routing my wiring for the overhead LED lights I used 5MM floor underlayment painted in a off white. It was easy to curve it with the slight bow in the ceiling.

Looking good! :applause:  :applause:

Seeing your pictures, is apparent how much better the aluminum cargo trailers are built compared to the "garden variety" cargo trailers. I look forward to seeing the rest of your build.

That's a nice looking trailer. I'm also using a snowmobile trailer on my build. 8.5 by 25 and had them add an extra foot to the height making it 7 ft also. Good luck on the build.

Started insulating tonight. Felt like the right thing to do with it only being 40 degrees and a brisk breeze off of Lake Huron.
