At least 6'5" Standy

Postby richard.forbes » Sat Apr 16, 2016 7:35 pm

Hi all, I'm new to the forum (and to travel trailers in general), but I've been extremely impressed by how active and engaged your forum members are. I've been seeing teardrop trailers around for the last year, and have finally decided to take the plunge towards building my own travel trailer (though I'm more in the market for a standy). I've been looking over the Wanderer 10 Standy, but I'm curious about increasing the height - I'm 6'5" and I'd like at least a few inches of headroom.

Would increasing the standing room dramatically affect the weight and/or design?

Also, could the wanderer be built with foam if I were interested in saving some more weight? I think I read somewhere in this forum that foamy standies might be a bit vulnerable to high winds?

Thanks for this wonderful resource!

Richard, Welcome to the Forum Family !!! I believe if you go to the Foamie section and ask the very same thing , you’ll find all your answers. ;) What you ask is easily accomplished in Foam !
There’s no place like Foam !

Richard,

What are you going to tow with? I would figure out what your vehicle can comfortably tow and then go from there. I am planning a standy 6 x 10 with the interior height slightly less than 6ft. I am just 6 feet so a little head tilting will be required, but it is enough space to easily get clothes on and off and have a porti potty. My hubby and I will be sleeping side to side. My build is going to be boxy so I can fit a door very close to the front of the teardrop and a kitchen out the back. I tow with a 1500 Ram truck so weight isn't an issue for me. I see lots of campers going down the road of all shapes and sizes so I don't think the boxy shape will cause to much drag for my truck.
Good luck with your build.

The notes for the wanderer hint that it's pushing the limit of what's sane to put on top of a HF 4x8.

I figure increase in height will also increase cg and have the thing hopping from foot to foot behind you, wind or no.

If your TV can handle more weight, I'd suggest putting it on a wider wingspan 5 foot axle trailer, and using a thicker floor, spend some weight down low, to balance up what you add up high.

The warning included with the Wandered design is a large part of why I decided to go with a Northern Tool / Ironton 5 x 8 trailer for the slouchy/standy I'm design I'm working on, instead of a HF 4 x 8. The wider wheelbase of the 5 x 8 should be more stable supporting a taller cabin design than a 4 x 8 would.

The barn was built on a Namco 5 x 8 and cantilevered forward with a little tongue redesign to make a 5x10. I can stand up (kinda) and put on my britches.

Counting ground clearance and possibly a top vent with a couple of inches of extra headroom building a trailer for a 6'5" guy to stand in would be at least 8' high. Not going to fit in any garage and strongly affected by crosswinds.
