What I meant is there is a huge variety of species we can catch or Hunt around the places we all live.

I mostly hunt whitetail deer. This isn't my biggest buck but it was my first with primitive equipment that I made.




A friend made the stone arrow head for me.




I also enjoy catching catfish

Nice! We have whitetail here, on one island (Stewart Island) It is the little Island on the bottom of New Zealand

Well the best laid plans of mice and men..
I took the wee fella away, all he wanted to hunt was rabbits.
Still at 6 yrs old a deer could be a bit scary.
We saw 1 bunny, although there was heaps of sign, (poo, scratchings etc)
We got him!
One very happy boy.

More importantly we walked about 8 miles over the 2 days. He had all his gear in a pack and some hill country was quite steep.

The same night, here he is with my Dad. It was great to have 3 generations hunting together for his first night hunting:

The wee rifle he is holding is a wooden ruger stock with a plastic barrel.
He is learning firearm safety with it.
He is just turned 6 and it is a great learning tool.

We gust got some leg hold traps today for Possums.
20 possums nets a little over 1kg of fur (you pluck em while they are warm, the possum is a pest here)
1kg of fur +$125 NZ
So all you people who buy NZ possum/ merino blend wool, it is wee guys like my son who will be providing the fur to keep them in hunting gear.

You have to start them young and get the curiosity of firearms satisfied at a young age. Taking the little ones hunting also earns their respect for what a firearm can do, it's has a little different effect than just punching paper at the range.

I hate to point out that even it the gun the little guy is holding is a plastic. You never put your hand over the end of the barrel. I surgery in my home town learn the hard way when he put a hole through his hand. He is no longer a Surgery!!
All my children when thru gun safety training so even if they don't hunt. They will know when guns are being mishandled.

Life is beautiful. Human life as well as animal life. I shot a dear 60 years ago, and just looking at that beautiful, poor, dead animal, did something to me. Since then, I have never killed another helpless animal. I'm sure glad there are no "superior beings" out there looking for a prize human, that they can shoot, stuff and hang on their wall. Long live wild life. Just my 2 cents, and I'm sticking to it.

First off I respect your thoughts. But without hunting a lot of animals would ruin the habitat and starve to death. Hunting insure a heath population. Without the(sport) of hunting a lot of animals would have been all killed off, leave none for you to see and enjoy.

Both possums and rabbits are both introduced pests in New Zealand.
Infact NZ possibly has the most fragile ecosystem in the world.
Prior to Maori settlement,then followed by the British, there were no mammals whatsoever with the exception of a tiny fruit bat.
The destruction possums in particular cause there is completely out of control and plays havoc on some of the oldest living trees found anywhere.
Rabbits are responsible for alot of erosion.
So in point hunting in NZ is very different than alot of places as pest eradication is paramount to the survival of native flora and fauna.

This is true. In fact the NZ government uses 1080, and cyanide in huge quantities to control rabbits possums sprays ferrets deer pigs chamois and tahr

Do you eat meat? I guarantee the animals I shoot have a beget quality of life (and death) than the animals raised in barns and intensive farming then sent in trucks to abbatoirs to be processed

I have my fishing license for Ohio, sure wish there were some way to get a license to fish anywhere. Anyhow, I haven't gone yet as I have been too obsessed with finding a teardrop. As far as hunting goes, my nephew hunts and we eat it. The last thing I shot was....Jaegermeister.

I'm an avid fisherman, mostly just little guys but I did catch a 16" Brown Trout last week, only my second trout but easily 5 times the size



This is what I normally catch, but hey, getting out and away from it all is what it's about.
