New teardrop kit

Postby lee senn » Thu Feb 11, 2016 9:47 pm

I have long had the idea to build a teardrop in the " stitch and glue fashion" that is used by boatbuilders. I long ago constructed a canoe using this method and was impressed with the result and the strength of the canoe. On it's first outing it blew off the top of the car ( fairly good at building, not so good at anchoring the canoe to the cartop, but I learned ) bounced several times in the median ( luckily no harm to anyone ) and was totally unharmed in any way and has been used many years with no ill effect. Now finally to the real subject please check out CLC teardrop as they have the absolutely coolest kit for a teardrop ever using the stitch and glue methodology . Also note they have utilized an idea I have often wondered about for joining two sheets of plywood and that is a finger joint or maybe a joint somewhat like the way you join puzzle pieces, anyway love this concept. Looks great, have you found when they will release the kit for sale? Any word on cost?

I don't have any specific info as to release date but the article says "soon". I would expect you can monitor the CLC site for updates or email them for concrete info. Lee

The blog at clc suggested $1,500, rather steep for a pile of CNCed plywood, plans and hardware.

I was able to take a look at one of these campers at the Canoeopia in Madison ,Wisconsin over the weekend. Yes ,this company makes some awesome boat kits. This teardrop kit was being advertised at $1799.00 . It looks cool on the outside and the construction looks pretty straight forward , built in a form like a puzzle. The fiberglass does help strengthen it a bunch as it is pretty flexible. The only things that might need addressing are: the doors being too narrow, the galley is pretty deep and may be difficult for vertically challenged to reach the back, the hatch is pretty flexible ( needs a better latch set up to keep water out while driving ) and the interior needs some storage more than the small shelf. Otherwise, it is a neat little camper and hopefully they will address some of these areas and they would come up with a great camper.

look like a flea. Need to some thing about the frame . By the time you add frame ,Insulation wire...... you will have 4000 for a sleeper with small storage in the back You have to build it.
TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN,
YET AT THE SAME TIME, THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE,,, SO MAKE THE BEST OF IT WHILE YOU CAN, AND ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS

This TD has me rethinking my plans. I am trying to decide whether to build from plans or just buy the kit. I think this style of construction fits the bill for what I want.

There is an article in the new issue of Cool Tears on this unit: http://www.cooltears.com/ I like it but it is probably still beyond my skill level. I built with Tinker toys and Lincoln logs.
