Bare Bones Benroy

Postby dirtsailor2003 » Thu May 12, 2016 3:19 pm

Howdy all! Been lurking around the boards and finally am diving in full tilt on my build. I will be building a pretty bare bones 5x8 extended tongue Benroy trailer. We dry camp in some out of the way places and we like to unplug when we go. So you won't be seeing any big screen tv's. No Microwaves, gensets, hot water heaters or any other electronic gadgets on this trailer. I will have have it wired with led lighting, solar panel, and a battery. For the galley, once again pretty basic. Mainly a prep area and cooking appliance storage area. No running water, no built in stove or propane.

My buddy is a fabricator that specializes in welding trailers and camp trailers. He is pricing out the frame right now and is going to work me into the mix. Once the frame is welded I will take it to the Powder Coat shop and have it coated. Then we will install the axle. While I'm waiting for the frame I will start on the side walls. I am going with the sandwiched insulated walls. Exterior and interior ply will be marine grade ply. I should mention that I build boats as a hobby, so I am well versed in the types of materials required.

Enough talk. Here's some photos of my plan, and a few examples of what cooking equipment I need to haul around.

4 mini-wsm's, a minitisserie, mini-za oven, and a 18.5" WSM rounds off the Weber collection.

Not much progress on my end. Fabricator is working up the cost for the frame. I ordered a max coupler from Oregon Trail'R.

Gained some space in the garage. Sold my Harley. Then I bought another canoe. Fortunately it can live outside!

Probably pick up some plywood this weekend to start a pattern for the walls.

Still on the fence on wether or not I should build my own doors or order prebuilt doors. I will make that call when I cut out the pattern.

Started acquiring things now it's time to get going. My biggest holdup is going to be the frame. Getting the good friend discount has its disadvantages. But I will get exactly what I want and won't have to compromise my design.

I now think I will go with manufactured doors. Having found a source here that seems to be reasonably priced.

Hi Alan,

Thanks for stopping in. Gonna be a bit slow until I get the frame, but i plan on prepping as much as I can until then.

Trying to decide what ply to use for the inner core of the side walls.
