That looks nice. Does it work on wood? I was wondering if the flexing of the wood would cause it to crack or chip? I am still trying to figure out how I want to to do my ramp door because I'd like it to be non-skid.

It's supposed to work on wood. I had to seal it with polyurethane.

Roll on bed liner for flooring?

Postby funengineer » Sun May 29, 2016 12:11 pm

So here's what I accomplished on day 2.
Sanded and cleaned the polyurethane in preparation to roll out the bed liner.
Mixed the first gallon of liner with the catalyst and cut in along the edges.

Here's the finished product with two coats of liner.

Not real happy with the finished texture. It's rougher than I wanted. I didn't do any extra rolling for the aggressive texture, just normal rolling. It's like a non-slip sand in the finish. Not sure why it turned out like that as everything on their site shows a smooth finish that can be made rougher with additional rolling as it sets up. I chose this bed liner over all the others even though it was more expensive because it was a two part urethane, was 100% UV permanent and I could manipulate the texture to my preference.

I'll have to give them a call on Tuesday to see what caused this. On a positive note it will be more slip resistant. :)

I think the bed liner will be a little more tolerant of the trailer flex than the epoxy would. I guess I'll find out how well it works.

Well, I like it. It should be about bullet proof and water proof and no traction issues. That texture kinda reminds me of an out gassing reaction that I have seen with paints. I don't think it should effect performance or durability. I'll bet that wouldn't be a lot of fun to remove. It really looks pretty darn good until you get the close up.

I thought it might be out gassing of the polyurethane sealer. I checked the stir sticks and cans that were not in touch with the floor and they have the same texture. Guess I'll find out tomorrow.

I think you are right. Those look like gas bubbles. Maybe the polyurethane wasn't all the way cured. It can take a while for all the outgassing.

I does look good in any case. I hope it holds up for you.

Any updates on that liner? The more I think about it, the more I like the idea. The fact that it is "permanent" has pros and cons, but in terms durability and longevity I think it's a winner. And it looks good.

Sorry for the lack of progress on this but my mother in law had to be relocated to a new and better assisted living facility and I had a mishap with the trailer that slowed things down here. More on the trailer mishap later.

So I heard back from the manufacturer. After I sent them several pictures and experiments I performed on the product it has been determined (by me) and confirmed by the manufacturer that the grit is actually unground pigment pellets that escaped their grinding and filtering process. While investigating what the grit might be I took a small fine file to the Monstaliner that was left on the edge of the can and found that the grit turned to powder with very little effort with the file. The owner believes that there is a hole in the screen that filters the ground pigment pellets. So the pellets showed up in my finished surface.

The solution is to lightly sand the surface which will remove the surface pellets, re-tape the edges of the trailer and apply another coat of Monstaliner. The manufacturer sent me an additional gallon and installation kit free of charge.

Hope to get this done later this week as we have furniture to move from the mother in laws old place.

Regarding my trailer mishap. I live in an association out in the woods and the local road maintenance contractor was brush hogging the shoulder of the road across from my home. He got into a windrow of road gravel and stone and chucked a good size piece of limestone into the side of my trailer. The trailer was in front of my garage about 60 feet from where he was working. It hit the trailer in the back panel. My trailer is screwless and epoxied to the frame so in in order to replace the panel, all the panels, lights and trim from the nose cone back had to be removed and replaced. Needless to say I was really :x but the associations insurance company covered the repairs and now I have a half new trailer. I had to drive 5 hours each way to the factory but at least its fixed and I have it back in my possession now. While it was at the factory I had them install a cover for the ramp door spring and an upper aluminum cabinet in the nose. 8)

I'll post up pics when I apply the third coat of Monstaliner.

PS I towed the trailer down state 3 times in the last few months (about 1500 miles total) and a trip out to Gettysburg (about 1700 miles round trip) and the floor has held up very well. No cracks, splits or staining. I had some oil from a tractor leak on it and it wipes right up.

It's held up good on the road trips I've had this year. Over 3000 miles and no cracks, chips or splits. Even the seams are still tight.

I think you will like the Monstaliner. I painted my whole Teardrop with it. Painted it over epoxy and cloth. I didn't use it on the floor but I know it is durable. The Monstaliner holds up so well to road debrise, rocks, sticks etc. so I decided against putting on thin diamond plate on the front and sides of my tear as I had originally planned.

I use a power washer on it after each trip and have had no issues.

Jeep & Teardrop look great! Glad to see the Monstaliner working for the flooring. Looking to monstaline the floor of my trailer and the inside/outside of my Old jeep. Wife wants my new Jeep done too... but that scares me!

Outstanding build kayakdlk. :applause: :applause: :applause:
I see you used the same Marinco outlet and GFIC that I did. I used the GFIC on the end of my shore power cord.
Your build gave me lots of great ideas for finishing my conversion.
Thanks for the info on the Monstaliner. Yours looks great. I'm heading out to sand mine now then re-roll it this afternoon.

I really like the Monstaliner product. I think you would too. Check out kayakdlk's gallery for how it looks and how well it covers. It's pretty easy to install. Just takes time as you use 2" or 4" rollers. If you go to their site they have lots of pictures of Monstaliner on Jeeps and other off road uses.

So here's the final application of the monstaliner. I sanded the floor of the trailer with 80 grit to remove most of the paint pigment pellets but left the ramp as is then gave the floor and ramp a third coat of Monstaliner. I'm happy with the outcome and the ramp has just enough grip left to it that I don't think it will be slippery. ImageImage
