5 or 6 by really long?

Postby inthewoods » Tue May 31, 2016 8:29 am

This may go a bit against the grain of a traditional teardrop but I'm wondering if anyone has built or considered building a really long teardrop styled camper? I'm thinking something with 5 or 6 wide by 16-18ft cabin? Probably 4ft high cabin maybe a bit more or a floor drop in some areas. I've got a family of 6 and we've loved our 5x10 (sleeps 2 + 2kids) but for some reason the kids just keep getting longer and bigger.... :). I was thinking of taking a traditional 8ft teardrop floorplan and adding another 8 or so feet to the front. That extra length would be 4 narrow but full length bunks for the kids and a bit of floor space between the bunks and the queen bed. Bunks could convert to dinette benches for rainy day or cool weather eating or travel day overnights at truck stops or Walmart.

I aside from the extra length on the trailer in parking lot maneuvers I would expect the longer design to tow just as well as a shorter one....

Anyone have any ideas or pros/cons to this sort of idea?

THanks in advance!

wow... I've looked at a lot of tiny houses but this is one I had not seen yet. I'm really not sure what to make of this one. Thanks for the link.

I think in my mind as I was trying to visualize what I was thinking about for this long teardrop I was envisioning a something more like a your average aluminum skinned 5 or 6 x 10ft teardrop but with an extra 6-8ft of length between the curves at the front of the cabin and wheels. sort of a shrunken airstream look but with a galley at the back as a typical teardrop would have. some might call it a stretched limo teardrop... sounds a bit funning thinking about it that way. haha

The Baja Benroy is in the Hall of Fame. http://www.mikenchell.com/Baja_Benroy_Photo_Album/

This photo, unfortunately, is just a photochop...

Following bobhenry's link, off to the side was this:

Kind of a cross between a longer tear and a Weekend Warrior. This would be a great foamie and would keep the pop up roof weight low.

My NOMAD build has floor space of 6'x10' with an overall length of 13' (nose area extends past floor). It really doesn't feel that big.

We pay an MPG penalty because our tear is 6 wide and the TV isn't. But would not trade it for a 5 wide.
