using a recliner chair for sleeping in TTT

Postby rustytoolss » Thu Jun 02, 2016 7:36 pm

I've been doing a lot of thinking for a TTT. That is narrow and short , say 5x8 or so. I would like it to sleep 2 (if needed) Maybe this has been a topic before/ maybe not. What about using recliner chairs for sitting/ and reclined for sleeping ?? :NC  I have no idea what a comfy recliner may weight. Maybe 70+ pounds each. That may/may not be a problem.
But when you think of the 75" needed for some type of bed. The price of good hi density foam, having someone sew covers (not me) and the weight involved building your own sleeping platform. A recliner is less than 35'' wide, already has good foam, and has all the material work done, and can recline for sleeping, I'm sure that their are a few of us that fall asleep every night in front of the TV, while sitting in our recliners
Hey it just a thought, That's what this site is for :R Most of the events I go to are Fri/Sat/Sun so I could do this, Heck I've done it several times in our Fifth Wheeler.

I don't think sleeping in a recliner would be good for your back because recliners I am familiar with don't go completely flat (level). I have found that the older I get, the more important it is to only sleep on a good firm mattress.

A few years back I slept on a recliner for nearly a month while recovering from rotator cuff surgery. It actually slept pretty good and I'm no spring chicken. Not sure how it would fit in a teardrop though. Doesn't seem like it would be too efficient space wise.

For me recliners are just comfortable enough to fall asleep in, but not comfortable enough to stay asleep in.

Might be tough to get it into the door as well?

All good points. But for just 2 nights it could work. And I'm not building a TD, but a TTT so I should have a larger door. This is just something to think about that's all

I don't know if I could get a full night's sleep, but get a good afternoon nap in our zero gravity style chairs when camping. To me, they are more comfortable than our two recliners at home.

Never thought about those! Have 2 that don't get much usage. Plus you could use them outside and inside

I have been sleeping in my recliner for over 5 years now. Far more comfortable to me than any bed. But then I have never had back problems.

I to have thought about putting one in a trailer. Decided a teardrop or near teardrop size or shape would be kind of hard to do. So started to think about building something that mimics a recliner. For me something on can slid into from the side. Some actuators for at least some adjustably. I had the actuators but project came to a halt when I had my shop fire last year and the actuators along with most of my wood working tools and ambition when with them. Now I am thinking more of a standy, about 13-15 feet long. Made to sleep one ( me ) and a table for no more than 2 to eat at. And a bed shaped much like a recliner. May be pretty stationary or some kind of adjustably.

My build will be mainly for myself, wife just not up to these kind of things anymore health wise. So really I only need sleeping for myself/ but I'm sure that as soon as I do not make provisions for a second person  , everybody I know (not many) will want to spent the weekend with me  . So I want to make an extra sleeping spot. And if I were to sell it at some point. Would be a good selling point. :) :applause:

Some Lazyboy recliners have removable backs. Makes them easier to get through door openings. 8)

When I put together my cargo trailer camper, I first bought a cot that was about 25" in width and did not like it. My arms kept falling off the side of the cot when I was sleeping. It was like a form of torture, being woken up every time you fell asleep.

I found that a cot 30" in width and 80" in length covered with 4" of foam was extremely comfortable, even luxurious. The length allowed my toes to not touch the wall and allowed me to put an arm above my head.

I may try a reclining lawn chair to see if that works but I suspect for real comfort/luxury, 30"x80" is what fits for me.

Many recliners have backs that clip on (I repair them for a living). A few manufacturers bolt them on, so they are still removable, just with much more effort. The mechanism (the part that makes it recline) is separate from the frame, so it must attach somehow.

However, I have sleep apnea, use a CPAP, and am a side-sleeper. Would not work for me.

You could always do head to feet doing that gives you more room did that in a tent with 2 people queen size 3 large guys middle had 2 pairs of legs beside them but it worked less gear to haul
