Suggestions / Information

Postby SwampDog35 » Tue Jun 21, 2016 1:14 pm

Just wanted to let everyone know what a great time my wife and I had on our first trip with our Silver Shadow. Such an improvement over the tent we have.

We have some improvements to make, Can anyone suggest a lightweight Canopy for the rear? Perhaps durable in the same sentence?

One last thing, coming home yesterday we were grabbing a bite to eat in Meridian Ms. And a Red tag teardrop came thru the parking lot (Krystal / Valero). If that was anyone on the forum, I just wanted to say hi.

Glad to hear it worked out for you! We'll be taking our shakedown cruise here soon.

As for a canopy, I purchased one on Amazon. While I haven't actually used it yet, it might not matter because it's not available on Amazon anymore. It might be somewhere else...? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Q4CQLY2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Ebay has it for $94 plus shipping.
I wonder how it would fit on the back of a CT with barn doors?

Edit....Opps, went back to the link and see that they are out of stock also.

I wonder what the deal is with that. Maybe they aren't in much demand? There was another well rated one that stopped manufacturing completely. It might have been a Kelty product.

Very nice suggestions, I will take some measurements to see if they would make a good fit. Thanks again for your time.

I hafta second the Wal Mart canopies. Bought my first one in 2006 online. Had no name on it but it was a 'First-Up', then sold by WalMart for waay less'n a hundred bucks. Think I gave $56 for mine with free shipping. Used it for years 'til an ice storm collapsed it one night at hunting camp. Split/tore the fabric & buckled some of the framework. I replaced it with a genuine 'First-Up' brand from the local WalMart, still under a hundred bucks. Son bought us a red fabric canopy to match our truck. Used that one 'til a T'Storm blew a large oak limb onto it & again tore/stretched the fabric & collapsed part of the frame. I used parts from my first frame to repair the 2nd frame, bought a new canopy fabric, & used it for a couple more years. It's now my spare. Bought a new Ozark Trail brand, again from the local WalMart, this time just under a hundred bucks (think they're now higher??) with red fabric (again to match my truck), & barring some disaster I expect it to last several years. Some folks say they're hard/difficult to erect, & heavy, but I erect mine alone in about 10-15min with little difficulty (I'm now 76yrs old). I take a little longer 'packing' it up & I leave the fabric in place. Just take a little longer to 'tuck' the folds of fabric inside the 'scissors' framework & it fits well inside the 'zipper' case. We've used ours in mild to quite high winds all across the USA. Once in Wyoming we had to 'guy' down the corners with extra 1/4" rope & pegs made of half inch 're-bar' but it withstood near constant 40mph+ wind for a couple of days with no damage I could detect. After a few years of intermittent windy conditions, the silver coating on underside of the fabric will 'wear away' at framework contact points but ours still doesn't leak...

This pic was in Wyoming in 2007 (before we had to 'peg' it down due to high wind)

Our camp at LCG, Lake Bistineau, LA. I use the factory 'guys' when there is a threat of light wind/rain, & we've never had any damage or 'pooling' with the lightweight guys...

This is the one I use.

It cheap, its not sturdy enough to be up on 4 poles, but it closes off the galley to weather etc. nicely.142825

Many good choices available
I like the REI Alcove I have 2. One can go over the Galey hatch for cooking the other on the side for lounging.
