AC Placement.

Hello All,

Working on some plans to convert a CT for travel and camping. What do you all think about the attached plan for AC under the bed, and ventilation through the floor?

The back half of the AC must be in the fresh air for it to function. You can do that with duct work and fans but a simple vent to the roof won't cut it.

The Vent is through the floor (24' x 18'), fresh air is coming up from under the trailer.

It may work fine for your space, but one issue I see with designs such as that is the hot air wants to rise..Path of least resistance would be for the warmed condenser exhaust air to be sucked back up the intake again potentially making the unit much less effective.

Maybe if you could put a hinged extension to the center divider (trap door style), then when you want to use the A/c unlatch it and let it hang down to provide a more of a barrier, increasing the likelyhood of the air finding it's way around the sides of the trailer instead. Though it seems more like a bandaid to an inferior design. Ducting the exhaust out the side/s of the trailer might be a superior option. Would probably work well if you offset the unit to one side and could just have a louvered panel on the side of the trailer to vent the exhaust air, but the intake could still pull cool air from underneath.

If your AC unit is adjacent to one of the walls, you could get fresh air for the intake section through a marine inspection hatch installed in the exterior wall. That would separate the hot exhaust air from your fresh intake air. The hatches are waterproof.


This is the one I used in my build. It looks to be working quite well.

I'm going to try not cutting any walls other than for windows. Every thing will be through the floor including power, propane, water and powered vents. The trailer doesn't even have a rear door.
