Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

New Member, starting to dream and plan

Postby Donut757 » Thu Jul 14, 2016 9:25 pm

Hello all (sorry for long post),

Want to begin by saying thank you for having me here. I have stalking and reading for some time now. Have an older camper that stays parked for hunting year round but it doesnt get pulled and have been contemplating getting a small camper to use but then saw a crazy looking looks Cargo Trailer in my neighborhood some time ago. When i saw it i thought it was different and drove past it a few days in a row, its a 7x14 i believe looks like it has extra hieght with roof top AC, few windows, and the RV latch on the side door.

When i started googling stuff stumbled onto this site, and with seeing all the AWESOME BUILDS here i know this is the route i will go. Ideally it wud be used as an occassional camper and hauling. With more camping here and there as the old lady buys into it. I will prolly have tons of questions because im not pro like what most of yall are. Framing and actual building wont be an issue, but electrical and metal work arent for me.

Again, im not close to starting yet but im gonna start dreaming, planning, and looking out for used trailers.

My goal is for a 6x12 V-Nose, barn doors:

Insulation and a few small windows (likely without interfering with studs)

Small Galley in the rear facing outward, big enough for cooler storage and grilling equipment, cutout for AC (threw barn door), and a small screen door possibly for easy access

Hinged platform (from side wall)for a Full/Queen mattress length ways. Has to fit me and ole lady and the dog.. Yeah she has to sleep with me and the dog

Cabinet/shelving in front

MAYBE small area for a port a poty (shower curtain for privacy, nothin fancy)

12 v rechargeable system w/small solar panel eventually, and able to plug into supplied power..... But again this is where im not real experienced and will likely require a bit of help in this department. Will likely just need to power LEDs inside and outside, AC if needed, smaller space heater, vent fan, fan inside, and that should be about it.

Ill be doing my homeworkand piggu backing off everyone elses builds/ideas. Any advice or insight would always be welcome and appreciated.

Welcome,

Except for the lengthwise bed requirement, this one is pretty close. (One of my all-time favorite simple builds) I also imagine you could mod the A/C closet bottom half to a galley that ran across both barn doors, since you would ideally stand on the ground and never get close to the A/C unit.
This trailer was sold a while back, don't think the builder is around anymore but I still like the setup.

I too had plans for a rear galley, but remembered we always cooked outside when we tent camped, and read several here that didn't like cooking smells inside the trailer. We also found out we wanted load/unload capability more than a rear galley.

Have Fun!

Awesome, thank you for sharing that thread. That is basically what i would like to do, just maybe a bit more storage in the rear where AC is, i think if i do a hinged bed system ill still be able to haul atv with no issues. Thanks again for sharing that

I missed the ATV part, here's our build, imagine taking out the kayaks, drive in the ATV. Done. Our upper bunks either hinge up to the wall/roof, or clip out completely via the vertical E-track. We use ramps to load the lawn equipment when it is our time to mow grass at the church.
