Kelty Tailgator

Postby JuneBug » Sun Jul 31, 2016 8:28 pm

As noted in another thread, we camped in the town campground in Telluride, Colorado while volunteering for a mountain bike race last week. Two friends were there with their Little Guy teardrops (5-wide and a Silver Shadow). The 5-wide was set up with a Kelty Tailgator shelter over the open galley.

It's
designed to provide quick and easy shelter off the back of your full- or mid-size SUV or wagon.
, but it fit perfectly over the back of her 5 wide with the hatch open, since it's designed to fit over the open rear hatch of an SUV. LInky here: https://www.rei.com/product/847659/kelt ... pa-shelter

Alas, REI says it's no longer available but it can probably be found on Amazon.

We think ours is the donkey's bray--kinda like the cat's meow. Quick for one person to set up and good for the gusts thrown by a thunderstorm or the heat of the summer sun.

But here's the deal: You won't find 'em on Amazon. Kelty quit making them. We found ours on eBay.

p.s. If you do a search, they're spelled, Tailgater.

I don't see other similar options that have sides. Though there are other awnings available that are designed for use with lift gates...

The "Tail Gator Sunshade" appears similar to the kelty design... sans sides of course.

The "Hasika Awning" or near identical "Kingcamp Compass" reminds me of a large tent rainfly.

All the above are available on amazon.

Yup, that's the one! Don't know why Kelty quit making them. We have one of their sundshades -- basic and sturdy.

Exactly the conditions encountered while it was in use during the 3rd week of July in the mountains!

I think we've got one of those in the garage. What it doesn't have––besides the sides––is that its poles are sleeved. (I find them to be a pain.)

The Kelty Tailgater has a short 3'(?) sleeved cross pole but the two main poles use the snap-clips and that's why it's so fast to put up and take down.

I found our Kelty by putting in a "Follow This Search" request and finally after a couple of months someone listed one and I bought it. Sometime afterwards, I got another alert from eBay and there was a listing of another one. I bumped that listing over to this forum and RedGloves picked it up.
