Truck Cap windows ??

Postby rustytoolss » Mon Aug 01, 2016 3:35 pm

Do most modern (fiberglass) truck caps have sliding side widows with screens ? I once had an old truck cap , the window would crank open ( that was in the late 70's)
I was wondering , if they could be a cheap option for widows in at TD or TTT. Has anyone done this ?

I did look at a few fiberglass truck caps today. Some had non moving side windows. Some had sliding side windows without screens. And some had sliding side widows with screens. Truck caps are cheap on craigslist. You can get a truck cap from $25-60.

I managed to get one free and was going to use it as the top half of a build. It is a decent fiberglass cap with sliding screened windows, however the seals/gasket material is dried out and shrunken. I'm finding it difficult to locate replacement gasket, and when I do it probably won't be cheap. So the cost/aggravation must be factored into the equation.

May not be quite as cheap an option as would initially appear. However if you just want that shape and type of window it may be the only realistic option anyway.

I would think that by cutting the fiberglass 2" larger than the window. It could be used to mount the slider to the TD. It may not be as pretty as some. But when your budget is as tight as mine..it could be made to work. And with a little work , could be made to look fine.

Look for aluminum frame windows that are held on with screws. Mine are. Those should be easy enough to swap with some sealant and new screws.

The issue I speak of is the material between the glass and frame. Easy enough to caulk stationary glass as a cheap fix, but not so easy for a sliding pane.

 If what you're looking for is the least expensive option, you might want to look at Wiley windows. A few forum people have made them and, after a few adjustments, have been satisfied with them. People, here, are always looking for a better way and aren't afraid to experiment:

Also, look for aluminum caps rather than fiberglass. They will have the crank out awning style windows.
