I like that the bed slides out, BUT I think it will be uncomfortable with the slots if you are just using a foam mattress on top of it.
At least for the times that you bring your wife, you could use an air mattress, but if you want the bed to be about the best thing your wife has ever slept on, add a memory foam topper over the air mattress, the thicker the better, it would then be like sleeping on a cloud. You could also just add a foam egg crate over the top of the air mattress, with the bumps facing down, not as good as memory foam but still better then just a plain air mattress.
For the times you will only use a foam mattress, you might want to cut two pieces of plywood to put over the slotted frame, cut them just short enough that you can store them under the slide out or incorporate them into the design.
From a woman's perspective, the 3 most important things that determine an enjoyable camp-out are a nice warm comfy bed, a private toilet and a shower of some kind. We want to sleep well, have a little privacy and be able to get clean at the end of the day.
I look forward to following your build.
