Thanks!

Yeah I'm 6'2" so getting changed in a tent or anything small is difficult. I really like the standing space and being able to get changed before getting into bed, especially if we're dirty or wet.
I actually redesigned it recently with a different profile so there's more standing room for me at the back, and less room above the bed.

Here's the new profile:

A couple things to think about...

First, if you build separate from the frame, you will have to overbuild the cabin to some degree so the structure is stiff enough to work in and around without the frame. Excess weight.

Second, Your axle placement is pretty critical when considering where your door will go. I would want to know where that fender was before I got too far into even the design phase.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

Good points

I would definitely have to move it onto the trailer once the basic shell is done, before it gets too heavy... I think I have the axle placement nailed, and the whole thing will sit within the fenders except for the sink that pops out the back side corner. I figure it'll be right next to the sink.

My only worry would be building before I knew exactly what the dimensions were, especially if I wasn't having a custom trailer made. Just because it's advertised as 6x12 doesn't mean it isn't really 5' 10-1/2"x12' 3" or something funky... Or a little out of square. The typical trailer buyer isn't likely to notice or care if it's just a little "off", but it could really throw your build a curveball.

If you knew for sure the trailer dimensions though, I think it would be easier in a lot of ways to build it on the ground.

My second teardrop build was a long-distance team project. I built the little 4 x 8' cabin and the bro-in-law and his son welded up the chassis six hours away.

There were lots of emails, diagrams, and phone calls to make sure the two projects would mate. It worked fine. The only close call was the near-mistake of misunderstanding that the actual axle on a Dexter torsion axle wasn't its crossmember but the actual spindles. :frightened:
