Someone suggested to me that 5 gallon bucket with the bottom cut out makes a good latrine seat. They even padd the top edge of the bucket with foam pipe insulation and say it's more comfortable than a toilet seat.

So in a boondocking situation, I'm thinking dig the latrine (putting the dirt just off to the side,) set the bucket over the hole, set up a privacy tent over that (if needed,) leaving the shovel nearby, and then "flush" by shoveling in a little of the dirt. Reverse all of that for teardown.

Has anyone ever tried that? Does anyone foresee any problems?

And another almost similar approach is to use the bucket with biodegradable bags, a seat or foam and kitty litter.
Then bury that. Or replace the kitty litter with another biodegradable product.

My husband, Jim, built our 2nd teardrop (look at our album), and bought a Camp-Inn Tent (zipped doorway, zipped windows on each side) that attaches to my side door of teardrop. It's great for a portable potty, check Cabela's or Walmart--they have some nice selections with accessories. You can always make a potty cover to conceal it. Hope this helps.

We bought the little pop-up tent thing. I put it as close as I can to our trailer without being too close. I use it only during the night. It works great and goes up quickly.
I got it at Bass Pro for $40.00 I think.

I'm saving liquid laundry detergent bottles because the opening is large. I used these when I camped this summer but could my wife use this? She is very willing to go in the woods but this has to happen in a campground.

Tom, get her a "Go-Girl". I bought a couple of these a few years back to use when I have to make a rest-area bathroom stop. It is very useful and will let ladies pee standing up and not sitting on a questionable toilet, or in the woods. And, you don't have to expose much at all. I can't remember what I paid but I think it was about $10 each.

Yes women can use them. If you get the cheaper detergent, small bottles the spout pulls out. Free urinal! I have even used them for children.

Yes, I pulled out the pour spout so the opening is large. My wife has not tried it yet, I'm not sure I've even suggested using the bottle. I used one at a primitive camp site with friends. It was great in the middle of the night and great in the morning (the porta-potty was far away). The volume of the bottle is welcome also. :-)
