Australian trailers leave us in the dust

Postby Ron Dickey » Fri Aug 26, 2016 12:32 am

this one looks like a kinda teardrop but look what comes out of the top..... and Kitchens, storage, and supspention are so far way ahead. the tent is even off the ground so in rainy weather you have dry feet.

This has always been my favorite. the tent folds up in the back roof.

But these are not teardrop in concept, they are "expeditionary" concept camping trailers...

Thank you for pointing that out not all of them many are on the road and have been for years.

I like too look at everything and think could this be put in a teardrop or made miniature ;)
It is all fun to see 8) imagine, your galley sliding out to the side and when it is slid in it faces you inside. Imagine, your teardrop being pulled over bumps without your wheels ever bouncing. Imagine, opening your galley on a muddy area and your feet are on a platform keeping you high and dry.

new ideas bring new fun ways to camp.

We never forget the basic Teardrop and many just want that, and others want more. The windows I am putting on my doors are used in ships. The Galley came from a ship galley, and many of these folks who made a teardrop were making boats before this. In both my trailers the first has a teardrop front but the second a teardrop rear w/ galley too. The old one had not galley the new one does because as we travel we can stop and just open the back and snack while saving money.
The thing I like most about them is 1. the wonderful people who have them and 2. I like a small trailer that costs next to nothing to pull.
It is like a truck camper with wheels. A warm tent off the ground, saves ones the back. And brings like minds, good food together. We all know the rest.

Some of those trailers look like they are built for a magic act. They just keep pulling rabbits out of different hats. A gross amount of setup time.

I think there's a enormous advantage to a teardrop that takes less than three minutes to have leveled and ready to use.

Thank you Tony  that's funny
of course you are right. although it takes just as much time for us to open the galley hatch as does for them to pull the sink and stove out. The difference is our galley is covered and they still have to put up a canopy.
We can pull over to the side of the road and eat lunch .... they may ram it into the car parked next to them :o

but it is still neat to see something you do not see everyday. I think they do have storage ideas worth looking into. And they offer interesting ways to raise the roof.

Those are actually some of my inspiration for having my outside sink that pulls out the side, and the stove will do the same (comes outside from under the bed). I'll figure out an awning that's quick to pull out as well over the outdoor kitchen area.

Perhaps a small explanation for trailers of this type.

In Oz, we tend to be a little more destination based with our camping holidays rather than touring orientated. That is to say, a group of friends will get together at a beach, National Park or bush area and camp for several days to a week. The effort involved in erecting the tent style camper is a one off exercise and the campsite will often cater for several families. It must be noted that, generally, the camper trailer is the province of the younger crowd and the hardship associated with the style is somewhat dulled by youth and a liberal amount of beer.

The T-van concept is sometimes used as a tourer by older people who do not like the additional responsibility of towing a full size caravan but it comes with an equal downside in less comfort. The great aspiration for recently retired couples, in Australia, is to buy a new caravan, usually around 20' (body length), and a 4WD and head off on a circumnavigation of the country. This usually takes anywhere between 6 and 24 months, depending on your circumstances. I did it and towing a big van is never easy.
