Bruce Peninsula, Tobermory, Manitoulin Island questions

Postby TimC » Tue Sep 06, 2016 7:26 pm

Planning a quick get-away in a week and would like some info on places to stay/see on my way. I will spend a night in Soo, MI to watch the big tubs go through the locks, then head for Manitoulin Island. The island is reportedly beautiful and I am looking for a nice campground to spend a night. There don't appear to be any Provincial campground on the island. I'll continue to South Baymouth and ferry over to Tobermory. Probably stay in one of the Provincial parks on the peninsula.

Any and all info about this part of Ontario would be appreciated. Thanks!

Cannot help you much with Manitoulin but much of the Island is First Nation's territory. Mississagi Provincial Park is a very nice park. we had our spring gathering at Point Farms PP and found it very nice. Of course Pinery PP park is a favorite of most of our group but I do enjoy winter camping there better.

Oh yeah! I've visited Clydes in Manistique and St Ignace a couple of times. Love Clydes, Cludes doesn't love me!

Just south of Tobermory is a Canadian National park. The water (Georgian Bay) is crystal clear and many divers frequent the region for the superb diving and many wrecks. There is a grotto you can swim into.

1 hour south on the Huron side (west). Is Sauble Falls PP.. Whether you stay or not you should spend a couple hours at Sauble beach. Killometrers of white sandy beach.

30 k south at Port Elgin is macGregor PP. Bruce Power (nuclear power plant) visitor center is interesting about 10k south. From this point south there are many Wind Turbines to take advantage of those NW breezes off the lake

100k south is Point Farms PP (Goderich). This small town is quite appealing.

I stayed at Sauble as a kid and now we take our grand kids. For the beaches mainly. In my experience most of the beaches on the east coast oh Lake Huron are sandy and differ mainly in size.

Most P Parks have flush toilets and showers with hot water. Not to mention trailer dumping stations , etc. But the are 40-50 bucks a night .

Ohhhh. A must , in my opinion, is to book an evening passage on the ferry from Manitoulin to Tobermory. You can have dinner and or a beer and watch the sunset.

Just returned from a six day trip to Manitoulin Is and Tobermory/Bruce Peninsula. Gorgeous! As Bono just mentioned in Ottawa... "The World could use more Canada." Wonderful people there.

I would like to mention that Manitoulin Is has dozens of private campgrounds along Hwy 6 from Espanola to South Baymouth. And the scenery is fabulous. I did not visit any of them, but, the surroundings were beautiful.

Forgive me for I am impressed by this ship; South Baymouth to Tobermory... The MS Che Cheemaun
