That's cool! But I got some questions:

1) What's a bear bait station? Do they bait them and shoot them?

2) You can shoot a black bear from a tree stand? Is that to control the population?

3) Did you ever eat bear meat? Never heard of that.

4) They mention "interior" Grizzly. What does that mean?

5) Did the guy ever wind up gong to the bathroom, now that it's 3 weeks later?

I spent ten years in the Canadian Yukon territory just to the east of Alaska. I have some experience in the "northern" way of life.

In some Canadaian provinces and territories, bear can be hunted in certain zones, at certain seasons using bait. (I don't know all the details.) So it seems likely in parts of Alaska I'd believe that bear hunting from a tree stand on a bait is legal.

I've never ate bear meat, but I know people who do.

Interior is a term that means "away from the coastline" in my understanding. I believe that bears along the coast would have access to more food and better quality than interior bears would away from the coas, and the salmon runs etc. Hence an interior bear would usually be smaller.

And finally, I'm going to assume he has :-)

Yup, that's the most common way to hunt them around here

Beats sitting on the ground wating to be dinner. That's the main reason for hunting them here.

By the sounds of that story I'd say he went to the bathroom right then, he's just not admitting it. The toilet paper is still in his truck cause he no longer needed it.

Just to give you another point of view or, alternatively, someone else to laugh at, there has been a big fuss (OK, a very small 'big fuss') this week here about the Ministry of Defence spending over $100,000 per year to buy 100+ black bear skins from Canada, to make into the bearskin hats worn by Guards regiments on ceremonial (ie, tourist-pleasing) duties.

Here is one of those tourists admiring the size of a man's bearskin:

Apparently the MoD has tried making bearskin hats from fake fur, but it soaks up the water when it rains and the hats become too heavy to wear!

Ira, I'm sure the pucker factor from having a grizzley trying to run you over is pretty high up on the scale..I'd give it a 9½ on a scale of 10..so, being that his anus sucked his drawers about a yard up his butt, he might not have to ever poop again.

1) A bear bait station is usually a 55 gal. drum with dog food, donuts, meat scraps, ect. to attract the bear and, yes, shoot them. While it may seem unsporting, that's not the point. Subsistence hunting & fishing for food is an important contribution for many Alaskan families.

3) Yes. How good it is depends ,of course, on what the bear has been feeding on. Blueberry fed bear is considered the best. The meat is actually purple.

4) 'Interior' is simply a geo-political term descibing that part of Alaska from the Brooks Range to the North & the Alaska Range to the South. Canada to the East & approx. the Nulato Hills to the West. Vast!

The interior Grizzly may be somewhat smaller than the coastal Brown bear, but most of us would have to stand on a stool to look that guys' bear in the eye standing on all four.
