Mattress ----- again

I've reached that point. Got to get something to rest on and was wondering if anyone had any opinion on air mattresses. Wally world has one that is 10 inches in hight but that seams as if it would cut in to the head room a bit much. Any advice?. There are also foam ones that run $300 + but that seams a bit much for camper mattress used 10 - 15 times a year.

I used Wally's 6" memory foam topper. Works great! I thought maybe I'd have to add their 4" but the 6" under my 170lb butt is quite comfortable.

We bought a 6" memory foam mattress from Walmart for $110 for our son. I always thought this would make a good camper mattress for little money. Our current camper mattress is a $99 futon mattress. Leaves a bit to be desired but I sleep well on it after the first night. My wife hikes me all over the place so I am tired.

I tried a blow up air mattress but it was obviously a bad deal. The thing was very difficult (impossible) to crawl around on. I carefully folded it back up and was able to return it. Do not try out the air mattress thinking you could get it back in the box. They make it impossible to do so and you can't return one out of the box.

I have the 4" topper, and while its JUST enough, I wouldnt have minded the 6" and would go that route if I were to do it again.

I still sleep like the dead on the 4", but sometimes I can feel the floor underneath.

Not a fan of them. They don't have any insulation value because of convection. Also, as the air inside heats up or cools off, the air pressure changes. They are either too firm or too soft.

Teardrops are a bed on wheels with an outside kitchen. Spend some money on a good foam mattress. Our's is 5" of foam with a 2" foam topper we got at the Foam Factory (online). It's as good as our bed at home. Why scrimp on your bed?

Words of wisdom here. If you're building a teardrop, you probably already value your sleep, why sacrifice it with an air mattress if you dont have to?

even for temporary uses, a decent air mattress costs 40-50 dollars, and a decent foam mattress can be had for around 100.

For the first 2-3 yers after I built our TD in 2006 we used a couple of 3" heavy duty foam folding play mats that kids use in gym class or for naptime in kindergarten. They fit together in my 57 1/2" wide TD just right & were about the right length. After a couple of years they began to lose their resiliance/support so we gave 'em to our grandaughters for play. We bought a 4" memory foam 'topper' at WalMart & on top of that we placed a 1 1/2" memory foam 'eggcrate' topper. That gave us 5 1/2" of highly comfortable foam. Had to trim both pieces slightly since our cabin/bed is just 'shy' of queen size, but larger than 'full'. Since we're both on the small side 5' 9", 160# & 5' 1", 130# the bed provides plenty of support & sleeps as well as our bed at home. We've spent a 'bunch' of nights in the TD & never had a bad nights sleep. If we were larger folks we'd probably have 'gone' for the 6" memory foam with an eggcrate 'topper' over that but 5 1/2" works great for us...

Second the idea of a good quality foam mattress. We got the good 5" foam mattress & then found a 3" memory foam topper at Costco. We sleep better in our tear than in our bed at home.

I've been looking as well, and have decided on a tri-fold mattress, they seem about half the price of the memory foam ones.

My build is a 5 wide on a 4' wide trailer, so I have wheel wells to accommodate. I plan to try a technique I saw somewhere in the forum, which is several layers of interlocking "anti-fatigue" foam (available fairly cheap at H-F) to raise the base to wheelwell height, then a 4" mattress topper. Sounds like it should work well, and the interlocking pieces can be trimmed easily to fit. Wife & I both like a firm mattress. Just throwing it out there in case you have to deal with wheelwells.
