alternative to a dropped floorwell

Hi All of You Planners,
I'm brainstorming again. I've been thinking about how nice a drop floor would be and that got my wheels spinning about some sort of modified lounge chair approach with a fold up tv-type tray instead. If the mattress were split in two pieces lengthwiseand sewn into a hinged covering, a person should be able to design something that could convert from a loungchair position with semi-upright back (comfortable for reading/eating) and raised support under knees. Then when you want to go to sleep, you could lower the position to flat, just like you do with a lounge chair. Hmm. This might be more comfortable than just the flat bed position when you want to hang out inside of the trailer.

Sounds like a good idea. When my sons were young they had some fold out chairs/beds made with the sections of foam in one joined cover.

Kris, I've seen some futon mattresses/frames designed like that. Sounds like a great idea for a teardrop.

I've been planning just that for the MiniBago. I have reclined the front wall of the trailer so that I don't have to sit straight up. What I'm planning is two plywood sheets (one for under the thighs, the other for under the lower legs) mounted on a 3/4" frame and joined with a knuckle joint at the knee. The biggest issue I see is needing some clearance to the side so one can grab the knuckle joint and pull it up. I'll build stops in the floor at mid calf level so the joint can be raised higher or lower to change position. This is my concession to sitting in the tear for extended periods of time. Of course the mattresses will have to be split down the middle along with the two "joints" so that my wife can fold her side flat while I sit up and read. The best part is that it only claims about 1" of height to implement.

I did something similar only oriented it width-wise.

We have a sofa-bed arrangement in the back and a table settee in the front.

Our C'tear is larger @ 6'w x 10'l x 5' h.
