Water water everywhere but

Postby Shadow Catcher » Wed Sep 21, 2016 2:22 pm

We just got back from a trip up the west coast of Michigan ending in Canada at Lake Superior Provincial Park. Setting up in the rain I filled up the 10 Gal tank but forgot to close the dump valve on the tank (opened to drain after leaving Platte River National Campground). I did catch it but lost some gallons of water.
Saturday the pump started sucking air and so I took our 5 gallon Reliance blue water bladder and filled it (again in the rain) and noted a spurt of water coming out the side of it in the center of the side where it folds :x a VERY usual problem with these things.

Does any one know of a carrier/bladder that will last more than a couple of months?

Reliance 6-Gallon Jugs Work Well

Postby Dusty Mark » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:51 pm

I like the Reliance 6-gallon jugs that I purchased from Walmart. No spigots to leak, only a simple spout that stores inside the container for transport. I use one for gray water and the other for fresh water. They are taller and narrower than the traditional blue jugs. This allows me to fit both of them in the footwell behind the passenger seat in our Subaru Forester. They can't tip in this location.

I use empty( and clean) cat litter jugs. They come in two sizes and I get them regularly.

I use Colemans 5 gallon water carrier from Wally's mart. It's very similar to the Aqua-Tainer but is the size I need to fit my galley.

I trust they are not used for potable water.

I use the stack-able, Water Bricks (3.5g) They interlock like LEGOs so one will not slide off the other in side there storage place.
They have tie down places on them, for tiring to an ATV utility rack or luggage rack.

They do have a smaller one and food storage containers as well.

Shadow,
If your using the collapsible ones I'm thinking you are(hence the term "bladder") its the nature of the beast I think. I haven't had any luck finding any worth a crap. I use to carry the collapsible ones when i motorcycle camped and had to replace them on a regular basis. They never lasted more than a season. After riding one weekend with a couple of BMW guys I bought a 5 gallon Jerry Jug. I've had it for over ten years and no leaks. I still use it to this day.

Thanks to all of you. One of the problems is we do not really have a place to store a hard side can and we do not need it 90% of the time.
I have seen a flexible tank that is flat basically only the edge seam.

Rotopax makes a wide selection of similar items I have a place on the outside of my off-road style build planned to store water or extra fuel.
Aquatank has a bladder style tank that can hold up to 30 gallons (waterbed lookin thing) I was considering this for the basement of my build or it could store flat almost anywhere in the galley.

Not to high jack shadow catchers thread but he will know tnhis to well and others may have heard of the water problems (flint,Toledo) in our region but how many carry an onboard filter system for questionable local water or even to make do
with lake etc water, I carry life straws in my EDC bag for drinking but a family sized system would be pricey but solve some problems

I found and ordered what appears to be a surplus (whose I don't know) 5 gal water bag on Ebay
Water filters yes plural two or three depending on source. Dalton Ceramic (normally white contaminated at one of the state parks), and a .5 Micron carbon block. If I am drawing from a vers suspisious source i.e.e Flint, or Toledo when algal bloom is present and Microcystins (or cyanoginosins) is present I will add a General Ecology filter good for nuclear biological and chemical.

If you want collapsible water containers that don't die, the only ones I've ever found that I was happy with are the MSR dromedary bags for backpackers.

2-10l are available, but they aren't cheap, they are made to hang from a tree branch or the like, but are built out of baslistic nylon with a silicone coating inside.

10l for sale $43 ish

I've used the Hydromedary as a hydration system for years and been very happy with it. Like I said though, not cheap

I ended up ordering a Harris Mfg 5 gallon potable water carrier. Checking the company they do a lot of DOD stuff. We will see how it holds up.
