Hello from Virginia

Postby BlueRidgeSquatch » Sat Nov 26, 2016 11:30 am

Hey guys. Checking in from the beautiful Shenandoah Valley here. I'm a hammock camper and kayaker, but with some recent changes at work, I've found I don't have quite as much time to get out and camp. So after my father giving me crap for years now about being a bear burrito in the hammock (while he runs around in his 40 ft Longhorn 5th wheel), I've decided to take a different approach and go with a teardrop. All the beauties of real camping, but with a bed and already packed. I feel that this way, I can come home Friday, hook up, get to wherever, and be ready in no time even if it's dark when I get there. At least I'm hoping that's how it'll work.

I plan on going with a "hiker trailer" style camper on a 5x8 because I like that design and I think it'll give me the most room (I'm 6'2" 280lbs). Maybe later I'll go with the big tires and springs, but for now I'll be towing with a Ford ranger. I've already been given some supplies for my build, so hopefully I'll be getting this show on the road once I find a trailer (I'm trying to find a deal before I break down and buy the Ironton trailer).

I can't wait to start picking your brains and learning from everyone's experience!

I live in Staunton, but have family down in Christiansburg. Are you in this area?

I lived in the Waynesboro, Staunton and Stuarts Draft area for many many years before moving full time to Smith Mountain Lake in '07. Watch for the TearJerker events and maybe we will meet next year. There is one scheduled for Virginia Beach this Spring and another for the Virginia Creeper bike train later this Spring (going by memory on dates).

Oh, no kidding! Small world. Not sure if you knew any Amblers, but that's me. Not related to Jeff Ambler in draft tho. I haven't been down to Smith mtn in years now, but I'm hoping after this build, that I'll start getting down that way for kayak fishing for striper. I'll have to check into those events. I don't anticipate I'll have the trailer ready by then, but if I do, the Virginia beach one sounds like a great time. Just have to finish getting some people trained at work to cover me so that I can actually take off some time

No, I do not believe I know any Ambers there.
I went out once this year in my SOT for Stripers in my cove. No luck. Let me know when you come and maybe I can pass on some Striper fishing tips.

I'd appreciate that! I haven't been striper fishing down there in about 20 years, so I need all the help I can get! Lol
