I also have riding coast to coast with nothing but the bike and some simple camping gear in the bags on my bucket list... and I think I'd be much better off on the Kingpin than the smaller Vulcan. If all goes well, I'll set off on that adventure in the summer of 2018. Then, of course, I'll come back and get the CTC and my better half.

At Sturgis last year I camped at Glencoe near some really great folks, a couple about our age, Doug and Jane. Nicest people you could ever hope to know. He was out of Michigan and I believe she was from SODAK. They had a 7 x14 v-nose, fairly bare bones CTC and saw mine which was still in progress, but complete mechanically and electrically and all plumbed with the shower and hot water and toilet . Anyways, we got to being pretty friendly, and having breakfast together, sharing whisky, trading off cigars and such. Well in passing Doug tells me that he's an author, published even. Now remember, these are biker folk. So I asked him what did he have to write about? Turns out he wrote a book called Just Cruzin. We walked over to his truck and he pulls out a copy. This guy rode over 16,000 miles one summer, from Michigan to Key West, New Orleans, Big Bend, to New Mexico and up the Rockies to Canada, then the entire length of the Alaskan Highway from Dawson Creek to the Yukon, down through B.C. to Alberta, then through Montana and ended it all at Sturgis for the Rally.
Blows my mind, so I had to buy a copy from him. Best 12.00 I've spent at a rally. Very interesting and entertaining read.
That's an epic roadtrip and a pretty ballsy maneuver.

when the rally there was finished and he took off across I-10 and by the time 48 hrs. or less was up he was in
San Diego, Ca. When I read that article the Assn. hadn't been formed yet but may have been, in some small way,
part of the planting of a seed as it were.

I have not heard of the IBA before. Thanks for sharing.. I'd be part of the SBA.... Sore Butt Association... It seems I can't get further than a tankful of gas before I need to get off the bike and walk it off for a bit.

Ya, there's a bunch of Iron Butts up here. Mostly Vets, Viet Nam era, I think. From what I've been told you gotta do like 1000mi in 24 hrs, documented with time stamped receipts and such. It's a lot easier with 80 mph limit than it was a few years back when most places were at 65 or 70. Makes sense they would be up here, we had the "Safe and Prudent" limit.
So just try to not pass the trooper at over 100. I've had the HP pass me at over 100 and just give me a nod. It's a BIG state, and the towns are far apart. I went to Calgary once, and drove all day, over 950 mi and was still in Montana!
Here's a deal we ran across when we were headed to Red Lodge for a Rally. They were headed the other way, and I mean to tell ya, they meant business. A tough looking bunch. Must have been 100 or so of em'.

I'd love to try it, but to be honest, I tend to lollygag and find a bar when we stop for gas or food. I'm not sure I have the discipline for that kind of stuff.

I did. Really disappointed. I would be mad if I just bought a new one. Resale will stink, but I tend to keep things a long time. I should be able to get any parts for the foreseeable future in any case.

I know why Polaris did it. I had this in the back of my mind when they bought the Indian brand. Will see the designs and etc.. from Victory head that way. Who knows... I may have a collectable by the time I am too old to ride.

That's a good way of looking at it. I'd like some company to make a dual sport bikes or a dirt bike with a road legal kit. 250-350cc light low-ish seat hight and low maintenance- priced in between KTM's and CSC bikes.

What is a CSC bike. I think Kawasaki, Yamaha, and Honda all make dual sports in the 250 range. The KLX250, WR250 ans the CRF230. Have you looked at those? They are tame out of the box, but they can be "uncorked " ? You live in Michigan? I thought you guys could tag anything there?

California Scooter Company. They work with Zongshen bikes have some "adventure " type and dual sport bikes.
Yes the Japanese still make duals. Heavy 4 strokes with limited fuel range, and tall seats. That's why I have a TW. I'd like something like a Freeride or xtrainer - 2 stroke with more fuel capacity and low maintenance like my old DT250E or even my IT's. Even my TW is low maintenance, but 4's cost more to fix than 2's if needed.
Besides I want American.

Hey Don,
Well the timing could have been better, But all in all, I'm not sure it matters. That model was discontinued anyways. And it is still a nice, low mileage clean scoot. NONE of them were going up in value, Including Harley's. Production vehicles these days rarely increase in value due to the large production numbers and the fact that plastics and aluminium are the most common elements on earth. I'm not versed in victorys but Harley uses the same platform for several models. Road King, Street Glide, Road Glide, Electra's basically the same.
It's not till they are completely obsolete and forgotten that they MAY see some increase in price, not value. And that is mostly due to the actual value of the dollar. The more we print and borrow, the less they are worth, the more of them it takes for the same commodities. The "PetroDollar" only works when we pump the petrol. Since we won't produce it, we can't control it.
But, you didn't buy your scoot as an investment, I hope. You bought it to ride. Cause it makes you free and happy, and you really cant put a price on that feeling you get in the seat of your pants when you twist the grip. You will probably spend much more on Rally's and events and roadtrips than on the purchase price of the bike.
You're a good wrench, so you'll be able to ride this one a long time. I know people who have more in aftermarket crap on their bike than the original sticker price, and are still making payments on a rambling POS that will never be worth anything because it don't work and they can't work on it. Headshake, Eyeroll...Facepalm....Sad Trombone, Waaa, Waa, wa.
I'm sure you gave the right price for it, so ride it and love it. When it breaks, fix it. When it's time, let someone else love it.
