Amboy is actually just up the road a bit from the shop

To get to Grabers go on 19 to MCGrawvilles road. Turn west towards the town. Turn left/south on 400E. They are about 3 to 4 miles south. There is a big sign you can't miss.

Hi Michael,
well I have finally done it :D As I said to you recently, I have been meaning for a long time to have a look right through your build journal. Previously I have only had a little glimpse at bits and pieces. It sure is a nice job you are doing, a truly profesional finish. Well actually probably not a professional finish as that would have seen all sorts of corners being cut and there ain't none of that happening on this build.
It is also good to see the boats and your involvment, they sure have evolved since the days when my uncle raced hydros in New Zealand in the '50s and '60s.
Also love the new house. Do I see a couple of sheds in the backgroung that you will be able to bring the Astroliner home to, to work on, and save on all that travelling time?
Wishing you and Carrie a very happy new year

Thank you so much fellas! We appreciate the kindness! Frank, I sure wish I could bring her home, unfortunately our tallest door is 7' and the Astroliner is 9'. Someday...

A little progress going on with the Astroliner. After a lot of research into counter top options and materials... and not finding exactly what we want, we decided to make our own. Having custom-made, one-off counter and dinette tops seems only fitting for this build anyway. So we started with some 3/4" Marine Grade plywood, cut the shapes, routed a strip for a double stack to form the edge, then rounded the edge with a nice radius.

I gave all the exposed areas a coat of 3M Premium filler, then sanded it with an air file to get everything super flat and smooth.

Image

There were only a couple low areas but the grain took some smoothing out. Next I gave it multiple coats of urethane primer.

More to come later on those after we get ready for paint.

We laid out lines on the floor, walls and ceiling to mark the areas for the walls.

We cut cleats and attached them to the floor, walls and ceiling with glue and screws. The cleats are wall attachment points. I'm amazed how time consuming it was to lay it all out. Luckily, we planned well so finding attachment points (wall studs and roof spars) for the cleats wasn't difficult.

Once we get all the walls cut and dry fit, we'll pull it apart for 3 or 4 coats of lacquer.

Thats about it...here's one last shot of our Hippy-Hut! (that's what a friend called it the other day!) Guess that 60's vibe is starting to show...

Image

I'll post a closeup of that funky 60's pendant light next time. It lowers over the dinette and raises for travel.

Thanks Phillip. We finally gave up on 1/4". We tried everywhere. The best was in Peru, but at $30+ a sheet, we ended up getting 1/2" (3/8" actual) that is beautiful, the veneer is awesome and so much easier to work with. Still in the same $30 a sheet price range. Yes it's going to be a tad heavier but in the grand scheme of things it's worth it.

I love the organic nature of your floor plan (see sketch hung on wall). The only rectilinear shape is the bed and everything else flows very nicely. Good job!

That sketch came from a European design that we loved, so we adopted it and are adapting it for our personal needs. We really like the curves and angles.

Nice to see you back to work on the Astroliner. I like how you combined the trades of woodworking and auto body.
I painted all of my interior doors of our house with Acrylic Enamel and it's held up great for the last 21 years. :D
Looking forward to seeing the table when it's done.
