foam to steel on modular fiberglass

Postby saywhatthat » Tue Feb 07, 2017 3:36 pm

I have a chance to trade some real rail top modular fiberglass pieces for some 24 ga.steel sheet. it is .05 kilograms / one pound per SQ foot. Has any body ever seen bonding of hard foam to steel

3M Fastbond 30NF is used for foam to metal but with some significant warnings about preparation of the metal. Also, polyiso is often covered in foil and and that may be a weak point. I think this is a real tricky problem. Might try 3M Foam Fast 74.

I'm not familiar with that, but you may want to look at Extruded Polystyrene (XPS). The blue or pink stuff at the big box stores. It is pretty structurally sound for foam. Most of the Foamies are made from it.

To get a strong bond with closed cell foam you need to texture the surface. I use a carpet seam roller, but there are other options. PL Premium is a good glue to use for XPS foam. Buy the big tubes, rip them open, and spread the glue with a notched trowel. Probably best to lay the glued foam on top of the steel rather than the other way, and try to get even pressure. Try some samples to see if you are happy with the results.

PLP draws moisture to cure, and it isn't going to get any through the steel or foam faces. I don't know if a little water mist would help before slapping them together or not. I've only glued foam to wood.

Thank you for everyone that replied
When bounding foam to glass a carpet seam roller is used. A air gun will remove all the paper
A 18 wheeler back in to the trailer.pushed 20 feet, rolled over one time.
The floor had been bounded in part way It need the foam injected. The floor was in two pieces. Just a few rips in the glass .
As the floor was in two pieces
Fiberglass lost it bound on the top of the floor on one haft,. Will post pictures soon.
I try the 3m After bounding let set two days to cure. The part was placed in to a oven at 105F all bonding was lost.
Will post pictures soon of damage.
